Default head bolts

just starting teardown for a new head gasket on my lt1. does anyone know if i need new head bolts or clean and reuse old ones?

thats a good question. i'm pretty certain the general advice is to get new bolts when heads are removed, as the stock ones tend to be stretched a little.
a good & popular upgrade is ARP head bolts.

GM introduced a new kind of head bolt. Is it called Torque to Yield? I don't think your engine has those though.

Anyway, those TTYs should be replaced each time they are removed. If yours are regular/normal type head bolts, they can be cleaned, re-lubed and used again as long as they're in good condition.

I use the $55 ARP bolts and use them twice. 3rd time there outta there and new ones go in.

Though your stock head bolts can likely be reused, why take the chance.

Get a set of ARPs and be sure.

BTY, I've read here that the sure way to go is to heat cycle the engine and then retorque em.
