I had a 700r4 (which is what you have in your '90) built with a fully manual reverse pattern valve body. Art Carr sold it to me. They claimed it would last longer than a auto valve body. The first complaint I had about it was that it did not provide any engine braking capability. If I let off the gas the car would just coast along, it wouldn't slow down. This was true for any of the 4 gears I would be in. If I would downshift it it would not slow down, it would just keep coasting. They told me that they all work that way. The reverse pattern is nice because when you move the shifter lever from reverse to neutral then to the first position which is normally "overdrive" this puts the tranny in 1st gear. Then to shift to 2nd you just pull the stick back one click. So on for 3rd and 4th. You need to put in a ratchet shifter to properly shift it. You can push that little button on the top of the stock **** to allow you to go back (higher gear) one gear at a time, but down shifting is pretty tough to do. Even up-shifting is hard to control under aggressive driving conditions. My tranny only lasted 5000 miles and then it flew the coupe. I have no idea what failed in it because I gave the broken one away and converted my car to a turbo 400 with a fully manual forward pattern (allows engine braking, don't know about the valve body's for the 700r4) valve body and a Gear Vendors overdrive behind that. Very expensive but very strong and a joy to drive.

That is exactly what I don't want. I wan't full engine braking. I even
have that with standard trans.
The biggest thing that bothers me at auto trans is that it downshifts when
I don't wan't it to. I can control upshifting manually but I can't control downshifting.
I thought that full manual valve body would solve this but I would like to
keep engine braking capability.
all I do is manually shift with the auto- meaning I keep it locked in the lowest gear that I want and then only upshift when necessary. For instance, in town I'll keep it in 2nd and then upshift to 3rd if I get above 35mph or so for average driving.
Every once in a while it will do something I don't want it to, but compared to the troubles of a manual valve body or swapping to a stick I can't complain too much...

I've never heard of achieving full manual w/o a complete valve body swap, though I could be wrong. You don't want a full manual on a street car, thay are a PITA for daily driving. Ramanstud's suggestion makes more sense. Go with a good shift kit too if you'd like. Check around, different brands may offer different features.
Dana at Probuilt is building for me a full manual valve body.
It retain the engine braking and it retain the TV cable to avoid the MAX pressure even at low throttle opening.
I decided to do this way beacuse the other option I checked is the TCI full manual valve body for 700R4.
This manual VB retain the engine braking and it is reverse pattern.
It delete all the accumulation and the TV cable and the TV imechanism in the valve body.
Without TV features the pressure at the front pump will be ALWAYS MAX.
You can expect a failure in the pump after 20 miles or after 5,000...
So I decided for the Probuilt solution that is standard pattern also..
Hope this help
