hello i have auto 383 ,stock computer headers [wrapped] ,high torque starter, car starts easily when cold, but after it gets hot it is very difficult to get started..car has plenty of power when its hot it does not feel like its binding or anything.. where do i start???? i have put several starters in this thing..computer timing problem or mechanical??? racer in need!!!
I would start with checking your fuel pressure and see if it drops like a rock when turned off. Leaky injectors make a hard start when hot.
Possibly there is vapour lock of the fuel system.
Couple of thoughts. Good Luck

Is the problem that the engine does not turn over or does it turn over normally and not start? If it is a slow starter when hot, you may need a starter balnket to keep the heat off the starter and solenoid even if you have wrapped headers.
Check the fuel pressure with the car on and off, it should hold with the car off for quite awhile. Check the ignition system out, making sure you get spark to each cylinder, just to eliminate that.
i do not have a heat shield on starter but it is mini high torq.. motor turns over slowly and is hard to start but it does start.. i will check fuel pressure for a drop.. could this be a computer problem with timing? or bad wire[s]?someone also said check alternater and [or] battery
Just because you have a mini-high torque starter, does not mean its impervious to heat soak, especially if you are running headers.
Just go through and start eliminating all the possible problems, next time you drive it keep a close eye on the voltage gauges, that should give an idea of alternator/battery problems.

sounds like the timing is too far advanced. i would check it with a timinglight first and if it is fine i would suspect that the computer is off. those old distubritors can be a PITA if you dont tighten them enough. good luck.
i had same problem with the stock exhaust hook-up.. i will put shield on starter, also i have checked timing and re-set timing can the computer be causing this? if so how do i fix it?motor also will not idle steadily, it jumps up and down.. checked the injectors they are not leaking and alternater is putting out 13.8 to 14.1 volts
