Default Guys I REALLY NEED HELP this time!!!!!

Alright guys, Heres my problem.
When I am driving and push down on the thottle far enough to kick it down, all the car does is choke until I let off the gas.
It backfired yesterday once or twice. I changed my plugs back to Bosch+4 from A/C delco, it seemed to make a small difference, The warmer it gets the worse the problem gets and less power I have. It seems like it wants to stall when I am stopped and in drive.
AND the oil smells a little like gas.
I dont have a clue what the hell it might be.
I have a cut air box, 1" spacer, 3 month old plug wires, new O2 sensor, new TPS...
ANY CLUES... I know I'm not the first for this,
Or does someone know a good Vette Mechanic in San Diego.
I am FINISHED......

well, initial impressions are that it's running rich:

gas in oil, stumbles on pedal mashing, black smoke out rear?

So look at the things that can cause it to be rich: Leaking injectors, faulty pressure regulator (slim %?), backfire, air or vacuum leaks (might be why it want's to stall out), or a misfiring cylinder(s) due to ignition problems...

Run the car, get it hot, try to rev it (under load while driving) as best you can and then shut it off and pull the plugs when it's had time to cool off. That should get us started. Also verify correct fuel pressure and bleed-down times after you shut the car off, and make sure all the grounds are solid, the plug wires are in the correct firing order, and then try to give us more details as to the symptoms- the more precise you are the better our answers will be!

If the oil smells like fuel, check the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. The diaphram may have ruptured causing the engine to flood out. The other cause could be a leaking injector. Its pretty easy to check the regulator, just remove the hose and see if there is fuel in it.

To check if you have a leaking injector, get a pressure gauge on the fuel rail. Then with the car not running cycle the key on, observe the pressure gauge. The pressure should come up to around 45 or there abouts, then it should level off and drop a couple pounts and hold. If it just steadily drops off then I would suspect a leaking injector or a faulty check valve in the pump.

ok I've checked the regulator line and it's dry as a bone.
I'll get a pressure gauge on it tonight and see what happens.
I hope I find something soon.. Its driving me insane...

the fuel smell in oil is a good clue but still could be lots of things making it go rich.
i would change the oil immediately for starters.

I am having the exact same problem described here. I even have the cut air box, mine is an '87 w/ a BBK throttle body. Did you have any luck? Can you point me in any direction? I'm about to go crazy.
Just wanted to add:
*checked the fuel pressure and it is right on with what my Chilton says
*so fuel pump and regulator must be okay, right?
*the cats are starting to turn red-could be caused by running to lean, right?
*sounds like it is sucking too much air
*idle is perfect, timing is perfect, but when you hit the gas it floods itself out.
*not throwing any codes.
*******Please Help!!******

Got it figured out. The center of the cat was going bad, so stepping on the gas was enough to move it just right so it choked itself. My nightmare is over.

Has similar problems with my 88 L98........ In my case, I had a stuck (rock solid) EGR..... I was getting 15 mpg before, and after it was replaced, 22mpg.........dramatic difference.........

Symtoms were fuel smell, hard starting, hesitating at idle etc.......

My expereince with Corvette mechanics in San Diego leads me to recommend Dave Meyer of Corvette Specialties. He's been at 3330 El Cajon Blvd for 20 years or more and 'vettes are all he does. His depth of knowledge is astounding, however, his mindset is that money is no object to make every corvette perfect and a showcar. He can fix it, but bring your bill fold.
