Default Best Scan Tool

I'm new to the forum and had some scan qestions. What is the best scan tool on the market for a 94 vette? I was considering something PC based so i could also do tuning. Is there any software out there that does both? And what kind of price are we looking at? I really appreciate any information you could give me because i'm currently battling the Service Engine Soon light and a rough idle. I'm pretty sure its a sensor but i'm tired of paying $65 for a diagnostic when I could just purchace my own scan tool. Thanks again.

Check out the FAQ at the top of the forum, many options there. Moates.net has just about everything you need one way or another.

Tuner Cat does not offer a scan tool, for tuning the PCM or redoing a calibration in an old prom its great. For a scan tool you can use Datamaster, check it out at:

www.ttspowersystems.com

www.akmcables.com

You will need a communications cable to use with the software and it is available from Andy at AKM cables. He also sells the Datamaster software, which you can download a copy from the TTS site. You can use it 20x before you have to register it and pay for it.

Default Scan tools

Well there is plenty of differnt scan tools availible on the market. Prices range from $50 up to $5000 + If your a novice backyard mechanic you could get a simple code reader which will spit out a code and then you go to the service manual... look up that code # find out what it is and how to fix it.and these code readers will set you back about $50 to $150 a step up from this is a scan tool which will display more then just a code #,(something that will display data parameters such as Oxygen sensor values,TPS data,Map sensor data etc etc..) These scanner can range in price from $200 on ebay to $5000 + some of the better ones that will work on a 94 vette are, OTC's 4000 enhanced,or the snap-on mt2500, the snap-on scanner is real user friendly and you can get a trouble shooter cartridge that kinda holds your hand leading you through diagnosis. Another Option is to get something like a scan tool program with a pc or palm pilot interface.(example EASE diagnostics) you need to buy the program and the necessary cable hook up for your particular vehilce. These programs work great but for a novice mechanic you might be just looking at a bunch of #'s and data wondering what is right and what is wrong. Of course there is the Tech II which is a GM (Factory) scan tool which you can also buy, but now were talking $2500 + but of course this would be the Best scanner for your vechile, which would give you great bi-directional capability's. If you want a honest opinion,I would look for a snap-on scanner on ebay updated to at least 95 with the necessary GM cable of course. This scanner can fix id say 95%+ of your problems with nice user-friendly functions. If your not a novice mechanic and more of the profressional automotive technician and money isnt a issue.. then look a snap-on scanner or Tech II or even the PC based EASE diagnotics program. Hope that helps.
