I want to put in a manual fan switch in My 93 Lt1.
Reason: I want to leave engine off, hood up, fans on to cool car down quickly between drag strip runs so that I can get in lots of passes, each with 150-160 oil temp. (If you think this is a bad idea for engine life--let me know why).
How do I install? What do I need? I searched and it seems there is no kit that everyone uses, just parts from a hardware store.
I don't know anything about auto. electrical sys. but am willing to learn.
Also--ease of installation is a big plus. The switch does not have to be accessable from the cockpit but could be permanently in the engine compartment.
Not sure if the forum search engine has all of the archives yet but you should be able to do a search and find this info. I just bought a toggle switch and some 12 or 14 gauge wire. There is a wire on 1 of the fan relays that you need to tap into to wire to the switch. I'll go take a look at my car at lunch and report back. The hardest part was running the wire through the firewall.
Your fans are controlled through relays, which use a low current control voltage to switch on/off a high current drive to the fan motors. Fan drive power is supplied to the relay through a fusable link from the battery. Control power to the relay comes through fuse block; the ECM turns on the fan pulling the other relay control terminal to ground.
Soo, you just need to wire a switch into that relay terminal with a wire running from the switch to ground. Then, when you turn the switch On the relay will provide power to the fan.
Sorry, but I don't have relay wire color codes for a '93 as they differ from my '88.

For the primary fan relay control wire: dk grn/wht
For the secondary fan relay control wire: dk blu/wht
If you apply a ground to these wires the relay closes and the fans will turn on.
Look inside the fan relay, find the wire attached to the "F" terminal inside the relays, splice a wire from this to the switch, then to ground, and you should be in control when needed.
