Default How hot does a header collector get?

Gang,

Anyone have an idea as to how hot the exhaust system gets where the header collector connects to the exhaust pipe- this would be on a car with no cat converters- just headers and pipes.

Thanks,
Dan

Much hotter than you would want to touch, but generally not hot enough to keep a non heated 02 working.

Temperatures also depend on the header coating if any. A header that is coated on the outside only will be cooler than an uncoated header. A header coated inside and out will be cooler still.

Maybe if you could tell us why you're wanting to know we could have some pointers / experience with it. Perhaps you're looking for a good place to stick an EGT sensor?

I am painting the header collector so it will not rust and was curious as to what heat rating I needed on the paint.

Thanks all !!

We used 1500 degree VHT spray paint on the side pipes and headers of our Cobra. It lasted about a year, then we recoated them.....kept doing that till we ceramic coated them.

If you afford them, ceramic coat them!

The paint will last about a year, unles you drive in alot of rain/snowny coditions. If you're willing to paint them ever 6 months, go for it, but from someone who went through it, you can't beat the ceramic coating.

Just my .02

I don't think the paint will work. I used 1500 deg paint on my exhaust tips and it didnt hold up more than a year.

The collectors are alot hotter than the tips.

Ceramic coating I think would be the best bet. Paint will work but wont last long at all.
