Default Replace cat with pipe?

Can you replace the cat with a lenght of exaust pipe for added HP instead of gutting it? That way, the cat could temporarily be clamped back on right before the emissions inspection?

what length and diameter of pipe to use? does it provide as much HP as gutting it?

I installed a 3 inch pipe. Its welded in and i threw may cat away. I would say the gains would be similar. The sound is definitley awesome with flowmasters.

would it be acceptable to clamp it in place versus welding? I want to be able to put it back on when inspection time rolls around

Try and keep the same diameter as the inlet and outlet... It will give you the same HP as gutting it, because while the cat is a larger pipe, the outlet removes any benefit because it shrinks back down to stock size. I can't remember off hand, are they 2.25 inches?

Actually, if you use a straight pipe rather than a gutted cat, you will see more performance with the pipe, because when the exhaust gasses enter the large chamber, the velocity decreases and the small-diameter exit hole further disrupts exhaust flow.

with a straight pipe, it's a smooth passageway all the way through.

On my 86 the inlet and outlet of cat was 3''.
You can buy a so called "test pipe" that replaces cat. I removed mine and cut the flange end off and welded it to a piece of pipe.
I had a shop expand the other end to slip over front Y.

There are a couple of test pipes on ebay right now.
Just search "corvette test pipe"
They go on just like the cat does, designed to switch back when needed.
