Default Problems with my Vette please help me

I've been drivin my Vette for 2 weeks, I have an 85, and after driving on a road for about 30 minutes the "service engine" light came on. I left my car overnite at my friend's shop and when I went to start it, It started up and died. It would idle very low and drop. We hooked up the diagnostic and it said my fuel pump was bad and my MAF was bad. Does anyone know how long of a job it is for the fuel pump to be replaced? I was told the throttle body inlet hose can give false codes if its messed up, what code does it give?

Where the MAF relays tested ??

Seriously, if this is your first time, the hardest/longest part is removing the gas cover/lid and neck assembly. I've done a few '86s and '87's, heres the steps:

1) Disconnect battery.

2) Remove the four screws holding the gas cover/lid on and remove the cover/lid.

3) Trace wires coming out of top of neck assembly back to connector and disconnect.

4) Disconnect all the fuel and vent lines (held on by clamps)

5) Remove all the bolts holding the neck assembly in place (there are several, 8 if remember correctly). On the '86s & '87s you need a 10mm socket, should be the same on the '85.

6) Pull the neck assembly out slowly, the pump and float assesmbly are attached and you will have to manuver it a little to get the float out of the tank. You also want to be careful not to drip gas on your car, I lay towels all around the opening just to be safe.

Once out you should be able to remove the old pump and install the new one with out much trouble. Once you do, simply reverse the instructions to reinstall.

Hope this helps and good luck ...

I agree with 87Clwy and CFI-EFI, replacing the fuel pump is a fairly quick and easy job if you have everything on hand. There should be a C4 Tech Tip that helps you do the job. If not, do a search for Fuel pump threads. Frizlefrak has a very comprehensive write-up on fixing the fuel sending unit which requires removing the fuel pump assembly, so it can be of great help.

You say you got a "Service Engine Soon" light and put the car on a diagnostics system. What codes did you get? Usually the L-98 MAF codes are code 33 or code 34.

I once had an issue where at odd times I'd see the SES light and the car would run lousy due to its going into Limp Home Mode. Thius was because the ECM thought the MAF had a fault. Driving with a scan tool hooked up I saw the ECM set several codes at once when the problem reoccurred. Several different codes MAF, Fuel Pump, TPS all at once made me think the ECM was at fault. It was. Not necessarily your solution, but something to consider. Tell us what codes the diagnostics showed.
