If your running street tires you will be ok. If you run drag radials or slicks you could run into trouble quick especially with a 3600 rpm converter. I make 305 rwhp and run a vigilante 3100 converter with a D36 3.07 rear. It's been ok so far.
How much torque do you plan on making? With that kind of stall and a modded L98 I wouldn't expect them to last very long. Here's my D36 w/3:54s after jumping on it with my 396 and a 3500 convertor. I still haven't dynoed it, but I wouldn't be suprised if it hit 500 lb/ft.
There is no concrete limit to how much torque a D36, or your transmission, can handle.
Once you get over 400-425, both are in the gray area. It'll last 50mi, or maybe 50,000mi.
That said, if you keep the tires as street and no slicks, you probably wont need to be worrying about buying a D44 anytime soon. DR's will make it hit or miss, it'll go when it wants to.
I would definitely go with a D44 .The 3.73 ring gear has no where near enough meat with that many teeth!! If you stayed with 3.07's I think you'd get some mileage out of them..
