Default Clogged cats??

Is there a way to tell if my cats are on their way out? I dont know if they've ever been changed, and it had after-market mufflers on when i got it. The symptoms I'm having are basically a relutance to idle when cold, and some intermittent surging of the idle. It also seems to really die at w.o.t about 3500 rpms and up.

The lack of power is the only real symptom you mentioned, that is likely to be the cat(s). I had a muffler shop test mine. They drill a small hole in the pipe, just ahead of the cat and rev the engine. They hook up a pressure gauge to check for excessive back pressure. When they're done they weld up the hole. In my case they were happy to do this for free, with the prospect of selling me a new cat. If you think it is, it probably is. Have it checked out.

One sure way to tell is if you're getting the code for high IAT temp... I had this happen on my old TPI IROC when the cat took a dump... Basically the backpressure held the EGR open and excessive amounts of hot exhaust tripped the high IAT code...

Before that, it idled fine when cold and ran fine until about 3000 RPM... When it warmed up, it didn't like to rev above 1500-2000 RPM...
