Default Hot Cam question

If I was to put in a LT4 Hot Cam and some new 1.6 or 1.65 rockers would I need to have a custon chip made to get her to run? Or just to get it to run the best it can? I'm used to old carbed motors not used to dealing with the computer crap. Thanks for your imput.

It'll run with just the cam, yes.

It wont run great.

It would definitely be advantagous for you to chip the car if you do the cam. Mainly because your car is a 93 speed density control strategy car which is not nearly as forgiven as a later 94/96 model year MAF strategy cars. It will run but you won't realize the full potential of all the work you did to put the cam in.

When they re-program for a more aggressive cam, is it as simple as adding/taking more/less fuel and timing? Or is it more complex than that?

Thanks.

I dont know if I understand your question, It'll have a real choppy idle, it'll make more power than the stock engine does now, sure. Its just a matter if you can live with the loss of idle and the fact that it'll be either too rich or too lean somewhere in the band.

I wouldnt be racing it until a chip was in anyways.

I have some experience here... The answer to your question is this.
The car will run with the stock prom, however when I first put the hot cam in my LT1 and ran the stock prom, she ran extremely rich, had a defined stumble off the line but once the RPM's caught up to the cam, the gain seemed obvious to me.
What I found after some dyno pulls and then tuning was that actually the car was weaker than stock from idle up to about 4000RPM and then just barely better as the CAM and RPM's matched up better with the stock prom. Then once the new chip was in and tweaked it was all worth the effort. The dyno does not lie.
So from experience she'll run crappy down low and then feel 10x's stronger with the RPM up (but 10x's better than a Mustang is still only 3800 series V6 power) I wouldn't go with out the computer tunig for long if you do

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. I want to get a cam so I think that I will get one this winter and just hold onto it until I can get the chip and maybe a set of heads to go wit it and do it all at the same time. Thanks guys.
