Maybe. If you smell rotten-egg smell, don't connect to the battery as that is hydrogen-sulfide gas, which is explosive. In that case, connect negative cable to the frame of the alternator.
The manual to my battery charge (the one from Griot's Garage) says to connect the negative to some metal in the engine compartment (not the battery terminal). I do connect to the alternator frame.
It didn't make any difference - it looks like I've killed another battery...
The charger manual instructs you to connect negative to a ground away from the battery so that when you connect/disconnect the negative cable, if a spark occurs, you won't cause the hydrogen and oxygen gas from the battery to explode.
