Need some help guys
1990 Coupe doing a water pump change this weekend and I dropped a wrench on the rear stud coming from the Alt. It smoked for a second and I was able to get it off there.
I swapped alt. with a new delco unit and had it checked so I know its good. When driving the battery light comes on and goes off and teh gauge reads right at 11 volts.I'm thinking that I'm driving off the juice that in the battery and the alt isn't charging.Maybe a fuse link is shot?
Where do I need to look?
Also I did change the 10 amp fuse to the gauges it was blown.
Put a volt meter on the alternator output (I'm assuming where you dropped the wrench) and check its output then see how much loss you have between there and the battery. Your fusible links are feeding off power junction down low behind battery. Some are tucked up under battery tray on my 90. Let us know what you find.
That was the problem wire attaches to a post that has several other fuse links I happened to find it by looking for the biggest ( I knew it had to be large) and I tugged on it just slightly and it snapped in a my hand with little effort.I had to pull the side panel, battery and battery tray to have enough room to add another fuse link in its spot but it was no big deal I was thinking the worst on this figured I'd be searching for a wire that smoked and my luck always go bad with those.
Battery is on the charger and I'll be driving it tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help and you guys were right on it.
