On my ZR1 I removed the resonator and had my muffler shop build a 3" x-pipe. I installed it right behind the long tube Aspaugh headers. I used 3" pipe from the x-pipe to the Flowmaster Force II mufflers. NO CATS. The system is mellow if you drive it easy with little resonance at "normal highway speeds," however when you run it to the nut it shakes the local Police out of the coffee shops. You will definately gain some sound and hp with the x-pipe. Way more if running long tube headers with no cats. Later 84 CF 91 ZR1

On my 93 I removed the resonator and replaced it with the x-pipe from magnaflow which is almost the same lenght. If you remove the cats you will have to have a test pipe placed in there.

I'm sorry I forgot on the ZR1 the stock headers and cats are all one piece on the early cars, so when you install long tube headers the cats automatically go bye bye with the old headers. If I had to use cats they would go right behind the headers, then x-pipe, and then pipe to the mufflers. I would not run an x-pipe to a resonator. Later 84 CF 91 ZR1

I have just cut the stock system to replace the standard mufflers with Magnaflows.....WOW!, Love em!
Now I want to replace the rest of the standard system with stainless and elliminate the cats.
Does an X pipe replace the resonator on the standard system or will I still need one in place??
Original pipe are stainless and have smooth mandrel bends. You can save $$$ by just cutting off the resonator and mufflers. Just make sure you go to a good muffler shop for the welding. I even had the LT1 tips welded on so it looks practically stock.
Why do you want to off the cats??? HP gains is not all that much, especially if the motor is stock. Plus you won't have to worry about emission testing later down the road.
Just my 2 cents.

Here in the UK the emissions testing equipment is not geared up to read my engine, so my garage doesn't bother to test it. If they are not going to test me for emissions I am most certainly going to do away with the cats!!!!!, why else are they there??
