I'm a bit puzzled. Purchased a burned chip from Jesse but the former occupant appears to be surrounded/captured by a "holder" piece (plastic). Does the chip alone get inserted into the ecm? or is this "holder" required? Thanks, Jack
P.S. I broke the "holder" trying to remove the old chip from it. Perhaps it was epoxied to the holder. Would a piece or duct tape hold the chip well enough or is the plastic holding device needed?
If your ECM uses an EPROM instead of the later L98 CalPac, the EPROM gets inserted.
So long as there is a socket in the ECM you can plug in the EPROM. Be careful to get all pins started and press down evenly till fully seated.
You might be able to use a thick piece of foam rubber between the top of the EPROM and the ECM access panel that bolts over the opening. This should maintain enough pressure on the EPROM to assure it stays seated.
What year? 86-92ish used a "memcal" that held the EPROM and the limp home chips. It usually had a blue clip on cover over it. If you have a stock one you'd have to desolder your EPROM, insert the new one and resolder. Some of us have instead gone to units with ZIF sockets on them to make this muuuuuch easier.
It's an '85 . But I'm still a bit concerned given the difference between the original and replacement (Ski's) chip. Any further thoughts?? Thanks, Jack
Well, I don't know what you bought from him so I can't help you. He should know what you had and have sent you the proper items as long as you gave him the right info. It might be worth a call to him to verify what you have in your hands is the right thing for you. Can you take any pictures?
Thats not really a carrier on the 85 model...its just a plastic retainer....It keeps the pins firmly in the socket if you will.>..carriers came later..
I suppose if you cant find another retainer that you could carefully end the prongs on the prom slightly outward so that the prongs themselves hold it in the board...
I will look in my stash of parts I may even have some of those things from back in the day..
