Default Modifications to 1984 Crossfire

Hi All,

Any ideas/suggestions on how to increase the horsepower in the 84? Currently have the intake manifold/heads off to fix a vacuum leak and was thinking this would be a good time to make some enhancements to get more kick out of the car.

Would like to stay under a grand to make a difference if possible. your thoughts? thanks!

I have not done any internal engine mods, but my '84 has about all the other performance items available from Eckler's and/or Mid America. I have the performance chip, low temp thermostat, underdrive pulley, etc. Also, I recently cut a hole in the radiator shroud that matches up to the air intake opening in the hood. I installed weatherstrip around the hole to provide a good seal when the hood is closed. In theory, I should see cooler air going in to the engine with this mod. It may all be psychological, but I feel good about it!

While you have it apart, replace the heads and either port the intake, or go with an X-RAM intake. Porting is free except for your time (lots of it), the X-ram is a bolt on affair.

Do a little research on the crossfire forum to decide which heads best fit your goals and budget.

How many miles are on the engine? If it's over 100K, you will see a low end torque increase by replacing the timing chain. A stretched chain retards the crap out of your timing. Set your base timing to 10 degrees and run premium fuel. Listen for detonation. If it pings, back off to 8 degrees.

Do a few mods, and watch the baffled look on the TPI owners faces as your crossfire pulls away from them.

With the heads off you could spend some bucks and go for better heads, but they won't do much good until you do something about that intake manifold. Those heads aren't great, regardless of what you do to the engine, but if you are on a budget, you can pocket port them and clean up the bowls. Then match the ports to a stock intake gasket. Match the intake manifold ports to the same gasket and port the living snit out of the manifold. Then if you want to go nuts, you can think about a mild cam and 1 5/8ths" headers. I have a 13 second Crossfire, and the heads have never been off. The only thing on that list, *I* have, is the ported intake. I LOVE TPIs, they taste just like chicken.

RACE ON!!!

Maybe 3:73 gears out back, good bang for the buck if your looking at a quarter miler or solo 2 autox'er. 84 CF autox'er 91 ZR1 retired autox'er.

there is power to be found in the X-Fire... however, there are limits. I would think 400 hp is about all you will get with a modified intake.

If you want to go farther, go carb or aftermarket fuel injection.

Another mod is the later ECU from an 87 Chevy Pickup. Big help in refinement.

I would recommend a Carb and Intake. That will definately get you away from that 205hp. I went a little farther and replaced the heads and cam also. Should have 425hp+ at the crank now.

You are right... the only problem would be emissions. If he lives in California or parts of the North East, it could get ugly, fast.

With no more modifications than mentioned in the opening post, the only advantage of a carb and manifold, is the manifold, itself. A ported stock manifold on that engine will match or surpass a suitable 4 bbl manifold.

I have about $1300.00 in modifications to MY car, and that includes a $700.00 torque converter.
