Default Size throttle body

I'm sure this has been asked before but....

52 vs 58 size. If they are the same price, why not go with the 58? Is there flow issues with going too big? I am considering going with a 52 but wanted to know. Also, what brand do you guys favor?

Default another question

I have a stock L98 with an aftermarket cat back system. I wanted to add a 52 MM throttle body. I was told that this may hurt the flow and the performance since it is a stock motor. Is this true? Any suggestions?

Hi.
The size of a throttlebody depends of the displacement (CID) of the engine and how much hp you take out. A 350 it is way over the needs for what that engine requires. If you have a relative moderate engine you really will hurt your driving comfort as the air that can flow through the58 mm reaches max for the engine before the butterfies in the throttle body are at WOT. That means that you will have less resolution on your throttle movement so the car may be difficult to drive as everything over the maximum need of air is waisted. Think for a moderate 350 engine the 52 mm should be sufficient.
Should be interesting to hear comments

l98 a 52 mm tb is more than adaquate!

on the lt1 the 52 mm is good.
the only thim you would go with a 58 mm is if you got ported heads or new heads, large hedders, and a new bottom end. you can can only take in as much air as you can use!

I may have a TPIS 52mm forsale soon that would work on your car just fine. 58 would be too much for your combo. I am actually going to do some dyno comparisons on my engine with the 52 vs 58.

Check out www.tpis.com for a more accurate answer, but a motor is just a large air pump. The stock TB is can handle around 400hp without hurting performance. If you choose to add a 52 on a TPI motor, you will need to bore the upper intake to port match that of the TB... 58 is overkill unless you are well over the 800hp mark. You want a TB that will promote air velocity, not total amount. The smaller stock piece will pull the air in with more speed and produce more low end power in a stock or slightly modded motor. The 52 will essentially promote both, but will hurt you if you have a stock motor. It will allow more air to flow, but at a slower speed and ultimately hurts performance. I'm not a physics major so I can't exactly explain it with complete detail... in short make the TB one of the later mods and go for something more noticeable first... I hope CFI-EFI chimes in... I'd like to hear his explanation

Hey thanks for the responces. Are you guys saying that my LT1 is better with stock over 52mm? I just bought one with my long tube headers. Should I wait until I port my heads or put it in now? Thanks.

I'm not saying the stock unit is better, but the stock unit can handle 400+hp efficiently. Adding a 52mm throttle body will not show you enough significant improvements to warrant a $300 purchase. You are better spending the money on other items first and save the TB for later... here is a link with dyno ##'s that was provided in a thread that I have up currently

Towards the bottom it details what I just said.

Hey Thanks man

I ordered the Throttle body now because I only wanted to pay shipping/customs once and I was ordering the long tubes. I do plan on doing the heads and cam in the near future. Thanks again.
