crank sensor?????

what is this and what function does it have. my car had problems starting and would loose fire to some cylinders while accelarating. took it to gm dealer mechainc told me along with the 'crank sensor' my plug wires were also bad. sensor was ordered will be in tuesday. one moe thing. they will be carbon flushing my fuel system. has anyone else had this done and was it worth the money?

a sensor mounted either on the crank or harmonic balance. it lets the spark module or something know that the crank is turning and to start throwing fire to the plugs. i belive that what the man said.. the mechanic at the gm dealership told me this, but on the cross fire page i had guy tell me '84's do not have this part. so somebody is wrong, i hope it is not the guy working on my car.
