1988 C4 automatic shift ****
Please excuse my ignorance, but am having a devil of a time trying to remove shift ****. I have removed center push **** and snap ring, but **** doesn't look like it will pull off. Does it unscrew?

It just pulls straight up; I believe it's keyed to the shaft so that it should not rotate.
The **** on my Vette's shifter came right off after the C-clip was out; but when trying to remove one from a used shifter assy, I had to destroy the **** to get it off.
Try placing a block of wood under it and tapping lightly to free it.

Had same problem, asked same question on forum.Take a small piece of wood and gently tap up from bottom of ****, my fell off on second tap. They must get stuck on the shaft if they were never off.
