84 to 89 Digital Display Layout
Looking for any input that folks have regarding the 84-89 lens display layouts. I know the general layout of the 84 display for the automatics (suspect the manual is identical?). The following discribes the 84 cluster:
-two digit perpendicular numerics and no upshift warning for tach layout
0 to 60
-three digit perpendicular numerics for speed layout 5 to 120
-all uppercase letters, perpendicular boxes and outlined sectional boxes
for the center display
For the 85 (or is it 86 or 87) and later models it appears to me that the orientation becomes "slanted" digital numerics, perpendicular fixed numerics, different shaped tach and speedo curves, upshift warning for the manuals on the tach, only two outlined sections and "kPa" versus "KPA" on the center display.
If you have an 84, 85, 86, 87, 88 and/or 89 can you help me out?. Hopefully, I will be re-polarizing panels very soon. I just want to get an initial grip on all the display differences for year at this early stage.

I have an 84 automatic so I know what this display looks like. And, I assume the 84 4+3 did not have a upshift warning? I am not personally familiar with what the remaining year displays actually look like by specific year. Like maybe the 85 display looked just like the 84 but the upshift warning was added or it changed to the slanted style?
I have several misc panels (perpendicular, slanted, upshift warning, etc) but I am not sure of what years got what. Hope this makes sense as I don't want to start preparing film positives for the backlight screening and find out I don't really understand the "little" differences or I missed a layout altogether.
Sounds like the 84 was a single year perpendicular style display (no difference between auto and 4+3) and 85 to 89 are identical slanted style (with the manual having the warning)? Is this a better question?

If I understand the question right-my 87 auto DOES have the upshift light and it is perpendicular, not slanted. Don't know if that helps-but I do have a few friends with AT's in there 87s and there the same as mine.
The tach's are different....
85-89 clusters use less colors then the 84 cluster...
but they CAN be interchanged....
as far as I know my '85 auto does NOT have an upshift light...
I've taken the cluster apart several times and never saw one, but I may have overlooked it.

your 85 does not have upshift so I assume it is an automatic. The light is in the upper left on the tach (an outline arrow with writing "upshift ...). You would see it if it was there.
and when I say slanted, the digitial sections of the readouts are canted numericas and boxes whereas the 84 was upright. I also assume your readout areas are of the slanted nature.
If I am correct, then I think I have what the 85 to 89 look like--they were all the same slanted style displays and the 4+3 had the "upshift". The 84 was a one year style display and the same for auto and 4+3.
Thanks for your input as I hope to be able to restore/polarize unfractored very badly sunburnt lens soon--look as good as they did when they were new.

Thanks for all the help as I believe I have enough info to get things going. Found out that some displays also have a "D" enclosed by an "O" on two model years. Guess that was for overdrive or something. Thanks to all for lots of help.
