Stripped W/p Splines

Have any of you ever had the shaft that drives the water pump strip the splines? The pump was not frozen or as for as I could see nothing was in a bind. What could have caused this to happen? I guess maybe I will change the cam while I am in there. Any suggestions on a cam? I don`t want to go to radical.

Was this on your 93?
I would check the cam shaft and see if the oil pump gear is ok ?
Which side was stripped cam side or water pump.
Did # 2 or 4 lifter make any noise?

I changed to a Meziere water pump and took the gear and shaft out. You can have it if you want. Here's a pic:

#2 lifter makes a tapping noise. Tried adjusting rocker, but there was no change in the tapping noise. The gear stripped on the cam side. What is the deal with the lifter noise? Thanks for the offer on the shaft,but I have a new one. Thanks again.
