I am in the process of installing TPIS headers on an 88. So far things are going reasonably well. My question concerns the air pump set up. Can I just remove all of the hoses and electrical connections from the air pump and disconnect the whole works, leaving the air pump in place, without setting off all kinds of codes or creating problems. Eventually, I will install the idler pulley and remove the air pump all together, but that is a little ways down the road.
You can do that-
you won't throw codes.
In addition you can "Quiet" you AIR pump (basically gutting it).
There is a tech tip on this page of how to do that

Yep, took out the AIR stuff, EGR and installed headers. No codes. That plus I did gut the AIR pump so now it is just basically a pulley. Looking forward for the AIR pump eliminator bracket from forum member korvette4u as we speak
An added bonus to all of this is that water pump changes are now much more simpler, heh, ask me how I know
