Default bad 4+3 overdrive

okay, need help , my overdrive is shot, no reverse and full of metal shavings, i have a tight budget so i need to rebuild, so my questions are

1. can i swap out with overdrive from 87 vette
2. can i rebuild myself at home with normal tools
3. if i rebuild do i have to take out whole transmission or just overdrive

and is there anyone out there that has done this thereselves that would care to give me some tips, any and all help appreciated

thanks

i think the OD case needs special tools to get it apart (its basically spring loaded, from what i have been told) and i imagine that it would be like rebuilding a auto tranny. and i believe that the OD units changed over time. i'm not sure if an 87 will bolt right up to an 85 or not. they may have just made internal improvements. good luck and keep us posted on your findings.

No offense to Orlando, but I'd wait on some input from someone who's actually done it before getting scared off. FWIW, I think the ODs are interchangeable, but I haven't cracked the case open either.

This link might help with OD servicing, parts info, and 84-88 interchangeability questions:

http://www.4speeds.com/dne.htm

OD rebuild kits are available so I'd imagine rebuilding should be doable at home. I'm going to pull my 4+3 over the winter to do the clutch and everything I read about the job says the ST-10 and OD are pulled as a unit.

you have to pull the trans and OD as a unit then separtate them.. it can be built at home but you will need a service manual. To try it otherwise is foolish. Yes you will need to fabricate a few tools to compress the clutch pack springs. You need to follow the manual etc. the big problem is getting hard parts if anything is broken.... frank

I have lightly followed some of these 4+3 threads, and I have seen Scorp make quite a few posts on the subject. Maybe we could get him to write something up, to leave in the tech tips section. Maybe it could have links to some pertinent threads.

So Scorp, how much spare time do you have?

I'm very familiar with the controls and electronics involved, but haven't actually cracked the case on mine, beyond removing the valve body.

I might be doing it soon though. I recall seeing techtip or webpage of scorps work

Hi.
I have an 85 and the OD had the same symptoms. It was a main bearing that started to slipped and made the reverse gear not working. It shaved off the wall so that I had to get a new OD. The complete OD came in a wooden box and it was for the mechanic just to chnage when the tranny and the OD was taken off the car.
I had the latest version of ODs which had been reinforced installed. This did not have a control cable (mechanic) who went parallell with the throttle cable at the plenum and down to the OD. The new OD works really fine and have not had any difficulties with it since I changed. I have now had it for 35000 miles.
