Default Primary Cooling Fan Question

A few months ago I installed a primary fan bypass switch in my 86 coup that has worked flawlessly since then.

While driving in stop and go (mostly stopped) traffic yesterday on the 410 and PCH near Redondo Beach, California I noticed that my coolant temperature was up to 220. I flipped the fan switch and nothing the coolant temperature continued to climp up to 237 before starting to drop. Granted I had just left a stop light and was moving at about 30 MPH. I continued having temperature issues for the remainder of the 1-1/2 hour drive home.

I got out to my baby this morning to start her up and hit the bypass switch to see if the fan would operate properly. I was thinking maybe the switch or wiring had fried but it hadn't. Anyway the fan started right up but sounded strange; like low voltage or low RPM's. I a couple of errands and came back home and lifted the hood and flipped the switch again and still that pesky low RPM noise.

I then looked at the wiring again and everything looked fine but when I hit the switch with the hood open the fan did nothing I guess out of desperation I rapped the fan motor with a wrench and it started right up This gave me the indicaton that the fan motor brushes are going out.

The question is, can the fan motor brushes be replaced? Can I open up the primary fan motor housing to do this? Do I need a new primary fan motor? I look forward to any and all answers from the group here.

I'm not sure about re-wrapping one, never tried or know anyone who has. I'm sure that like any electric motor a good armature shop could do it if it's not a sealed unit. Howerver, it may cost more than just finding a good used one.

Here's one for $45 "buy it now" on ebay.

I've bought from this seller before and he's an honest Christian seller. I bought something from him that turned out to be the wrong part and he refunded my credit card without hassle.

Thanks Skatepark

I was wondering more about replacing the brushes instead of re-wrapping the motor however I did order the fan from him. Thanks for you effort locating the seller.

Once again the forum is the GREATEST!!!

I just replaced the fan motor with a new one. Doubt you go get someone locally to rebuild it for less.

You're welcome, I hope it turns out to be a good one. If not he'll take care of you. I hope thats a good deal, as I didn't research prices or availability on new ones. I just saw your thread and that no one had responded. I remembered seeing that fan on ebay and went back and found it. Hopefully it will fix you right up.
