85 maf tuning(porting)?
is there a faq on how to port or modify mafs to get the most air flow without reducing sensor response? i've done a search and couldn't find diddlyl. i want to know what to do and how to do it. is that too much to ask?
some say, "remove the MAF screen"... others say it doesn't matter.
I am not sure.
Generally speaking, the TPI is the real restriction. On a stock L98, modifying that will give you the best results. And really, your best bet isn't so much modifying, it's replacing.
By the time you spend hours honing, machining and such, it's easier and cheaper to upgrade.
Check with Edelbrock, Exotic Muscle, TPiS or LPE. They all have options for upgrading the TPI.
If it were me I'd take the money for an aftermarket MAF and either get some AS&M runners, or drop the entire intake system off at a competent porter. I believe Bob@precisionporting is a supporting vendor and I hear he does good work reasonably.
The first step is to locate the grooves around each end that mark the end caps which hold in the screens.
Then run a sharp knife blade around those grooves quite a few times till you have cut through to the inner neck of the MAF. When that happens you should hear a "snap". Then use a flat blade to pop the end caps free; it may be necessary to do a little more cutting of the groove.
Once the end caps are off, remove the screens and use some sand paper to smooth the ends.
Then cover the two ends of the inner sensor wire tube with duct tape and take a hack saw to the five cooling fins of the heat sink. Use a Dremel to smooth the remnents of the cooling fins a little, wipe out and blow out any Al dust and remove the duct tape from the ends of the sensor tube.
Don't handle the MAF too roughly as the internal sensor wires are small and somewhat sensitive.
