Thanks for the offer Jeff but I'm done for a while now anyway. I'll hopefully have that parts order for you shortly.
Mike, Let me know if you notice a difference...I have to change mine soon and seems there is alot to choose from. I won't use Redline, I remember about 8-10 years ago reading about some of the Team ZR-1 guys burning up ZFs with Redline fluid.

FWIW, I just bought some recently and the Castrol TWS was $13.25 a quart from the local BMW place. When I'd bought it a year ago it was under $9 a quart. Thank God I don't have an engine that requires it!

This is the applicable AMSOIL fluid for the ZF transmission. Designed for this type of application, labeled to meet GM part 1052931 part specifications, and compatible with brass synchros.

Never tried it but I have never once heard a negative thing about any type of Amsoil.
Im guessing they must all be pretty close.

Does the car have to be level when I change the fluid? Or can I just drive up on my ramps?

Thanks and Season's Greetings to all

Has to be level.
Also, (in case you don't know this yet) make sure you take out the fill plug before you take out the drain plug. Sitting there with all the fluid drained is the wrong time to find out the fill plug is stuck.

Merry Christmas

Actually, it doesn't have to be level when you fill it. I find it easier to mess around with it while the side is raised a bit. I fill it up, leave the drain pan under it, lower the car and let the excess fluid drain out, then raise it up again to put in the plug and torque it properly. It's just a lot easier than trying to do that with the car on the ground. Especially trying to turn a wrench on the fill plug, the handle hits the ground all the time.

I don't think I'd try that with ramps though.

I have Mobil 1 15w50 extended life in mine right now. I do have something going on with my 2nd gear syncro though, when running the car hard the trans will scratch while going into 2nd. Could this have been caused because of improper lube? I had figured it was just due to two many perma grin runs.

Default My first ZF burned up...

Bill Boudreau (ZFdoc) sent me some data showing the viscosity of the ZF transmission oil and the amount of particulates suspended therein for various miles. I wish I had the info he gave me to show you, but in essence, what I took from the article/test was 15,000 to no more than 20,000 miles (as I recall) for "normal" Corvette highway driving, or more often if you're doing racing.

I had put 20k miles on the transmission that was in the car from the time I bought it (used) when suddenly it caused the car to act as tho I had mashed on the brakes - eventually locking up and sliding to a stop. But, I have no idea how many miles the oil had on it prior to my buying the car. However, after talking to Bill B, I suspected the oil level had been low and I was unaware.

But, when I drained the broken transmission, to my surprise it was not low on oil as I had expected, but it did have a greenish-grey/black appearance with a significant amount of particulate matter in it (no surprise there).

Upon taking delivery of my new ZF transmission, here is what Bill B said:

>>>The transmission will come filled with Castrol TWS 10W-60 full-synthetic oil after it has been balanced and blueprinted. 15K mile interval between changes are advised. Your build sheet will specify BMW part number and quantity required for transmission oil change.<<<

I'm no expert, but Bill is. So, I'm going with his suggestion before spring so I have a starting point on my "new" Z.

I guess my point is, "We're not in Kansas anymore, ToTo..." And, the ZF is not the same animal as the ol' M21 or M22 GM 4-speed either!

FWIW,

P.

Count me as another owner that has lost a trans while using Red Line. I'm using the Castrol/BMW fluid now, no problems.

I use the expensive BMW oil too (it is speced for some M series engines). I found the price varies greatly from dealer to dealer. I recall paying about $10 per qt./liter.
