Default A4 > 500rwhp = Which gears?

I am just curious, I switched to 3.42's when I was planning 450rwhp. Now, I am probably closer to 600rwhp. For guys with more than 500rwhp, what gears are you running?

I am considering selling the 3.42's and going back to 2.73's. Right now, 1st and 2nd gear are nearly useless until I hit 55-60mph.

I have the 3.42's and they work great with the A4. They are great on the street/highway and the strip. I would keep them and maybe have your shift points checked out by a tuner if you are short shifting or something like that. I am not sure from your statement what your exact problem is with your present gears.

I having a feeling you will be in the same boat when you get that beast your having built at ECS. 3.42's with the power your going to be making will be difficult to hook for sure Good problem to have though

Haha - I'm going from 2.73:1 to 3.90:1 and will be eventually making "interesting" power

I personally wouldn't have it any other way. Good luck on your decision.

Thanks Doc for the compliment on what ECS is cooking for me. You are probably right in that it is going to be difficult to hook up. Doug, is putting a lot of personal time into setting it up right. Hogurt, I will let you know about my personal experience with the 3.42's as ECS develops my baby. Doc, your car is legendary with all the power you are making, I grew up around here admiring your beast.

Green,

What info did you use to decide on going with 3.90's? If you are making less than 400rwhp, 3.90's make sense, but at 600rwhp, I suspect anything above 3.42's will simply make your car slower? As it stands, I can NEVER get into 1st gear at full throttle and it's extremely difficult to get into 2nd at WOT. With more gear, both first and second would require less than WOT. . . thoughts?

If I want to go WOT in 1st or 2nd, I'll get sticky race tyres.

However, that is not the way I drive. I do not drag race, I roadrace, and I live my life above 4000rpm (my car currently redlines at 7000rpm).

With my car spun up, I have no need to go to sudden wide open throttle because I am in powerband already.

With my new engine I will be making almost twice what I am making now (currently a little less than 400rwhp) and the redline will be higher at 7500rpm. But the reason I mod my car to have fun. Traction (or a complete lack of it) is a big part of that fun for me.

Again, these are my methods - your mileage may vary.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

EG

I Went from a 2.73 to a 3.42 in my 550rwhp car and wouldn't change anything. With the 2800 stall it takes some practice to get through 1-2nd, but a good set of Drag Radials is a MUST. With some practice and DR's the car is driveable, and sick

Stick with the 3.42s as they are the perfect gear even at your power levels and with the saved $ buy some et street drag radials, bf drag radials or good old fashion et street DOT cheater slicks (as they are the only tires that will get you some decent traction on the street and track.

Gear change back to 2.73 is not your best bang for the buck. Get some better tires and be sure your stock A4 has been upgraded....like another poster said, history shows that it may not last long

Somewhere near 660rwhp A4 3.42 and if you are not at WOT in 1 or 2nd because of spin then you shouldn't be at WOT with those tires. Just at the threshold of spinning is the fastest. Spinning is slow but its slow at 450rwhp or 1000rwhp.

I have had the DR's. I was driving them daily. . .until I got caught in the rain.

Right now, I am probably getting new wheels so I will have a set for the track and a set for daily driving.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess I will stick with the 3.42's.

3.73 with a 4000 stall... works like a champ for me!
