Default Another F/I Project for me - WTB: Crank Balancer Install Tool

Too much stress on the stock style crank balancers with flip-drive - I replaced the OE stock one a long time back and now this one has decided to take a dump and go cockeyed and chewed the belt!

I am going with the Fluidampr 740121 solid balancer for my set-up -

SO - Before I go and purchase the one I want (HAWK install tool at Colorado Speed) I wanted to see what someone might have that they want to sell

Hit me up with what you may have

Plus I know I can make one but I do not want to make a home made job one for my project!

Thanks,Matt

How about using an LS7 crank bolt to get it started? Sounds like they are 3" longer than LS1 bolt. Texas speed has them listed about $9.

As much as I appreciate the ingenuity of your thought process I wanna go with an install tool - I don't want to take any unnecessary chances at this point -

For me it's worth the extra $ for the tool thus saving myself some serious heartache down the road

Thanks,Matt

Hit me up Matt. I have a homemade one someone let me borrow on LS1tech a while ago. I never used it but it was a "pass it on" deal so I just ask that you send it to the next person who needs it.

You can make your own matt. But if you don't want to do that OTC makes a nice crank balancer puller / install tool.

I called Summit today and they are going to have theirs in Stock this week and I got the all one piece Fluidampr at thesame time.

It all came to $405 shipped free. They price matched the Fluidampr off the Internet.

So I will slap it in as soon as it comes in and pun the new one. I already yanked everything off Saturday and cleaned it all up.

Then I'll be back on the road.

Thanks, Matt

If you want pictures of the Balancer and Tool, I don't have those either as of yet - However here they and at this point this is the best I can do:

Balancer:

They're simple enough to make. Threaded rod + washers + nut, but that install tool looks nice too!

What's the advantage of the balancer you're getting compared to something like the Innovators West one?

Don't know if the Fluidampr is or has an advantage over the I/W or anything to that degree -

But what advantage does the I/W have over the Fluidampr? except if you want a key-way - But I don't have a key-way on my crank snout and I would have to drill and pin the I/W too just like I will for the Fluidampr

One advantage that does appeal to me is that the price is better and I believe that the IW stock size one is $550 plus shipping compared to $360 I got the Fluidampr from Summit for-

Either way price is great on the Fluidampr and is a solid one piece balancer and Fluidampr is a proven part and it will do exactly what I need it to do for my set-up

No more crap stock rubber sealed balancers -

Thanks,Matt

I just enjoy post when someone like you and other members who have the skill and tools to fix your own cars. I have no tools or skills , I do enjoy learning from others on how to fix or repair our C5.

Right on and I hear you completely - I do enjoy working on the Vette or any of my other cars and friend and family and even neighbors too!

Plus I didn't and don't "feel" like taking any chances with a home made tool - I know I can make one and have seen the specs for it -

But for me one home made mistake can cost me a crank if I do something wrong with washers ans threaded rods and nuts

To me it's worth the couple of extra bucks or at this point since I got the discount price match from Summit I essentially got the tool for free and free shipping!

Thanks,Matt

The problem with that method is that I've yet to find any threaded rod strong enough for repeated use. I've broken one off in the crank before and had to go through that wonderful process of extracting it.
The OTC kit with the new Matco extension adapter for the LS engines is the best option there is IMO. Also, although I have the 4531 kit, for those that can't justify the expense, check with your local parts stores for what they're renting out. The rental is free and all of the stores in my town are renting that OTC kit.

I'm going to work on getting the part# for the Matco adapter and report back.

Didn't know that they were that prone to breaking.. but I certainly won't use my homemade one again!
