Understood. Yes, I know about Xtreme, but at the time they didn't do the lowering mod. Not sure if they do it now, but I feel mine is an easier solution anyway. Now that the overheating is gone I'm looking to get more power, so I'll be getting with Nate soon.
Ganson,
If you have the ability to do what you did to your fan shroud..you have the ability to mod the radiator. It is so simple it is not even funny. Cut the lower Radiator Brackets move the forward until the top of the Radiator drops enough to allow for a coupler and airbridge into your inlet to the blower. Move fwd. aproximately 4-6" and reweld of drill and bolt. Should take you no longer than 2 hours to do so. You will also have to trim the brackets that hold down the top of rad..I believe there are 2 13mm bolts per side..the whole top of the radiator is just a cap bolted down on the frame to hold the radiatior in place....the lower rad bracket is like a cradle for the rad. There is plenty of air that gets to the RAD more than the stock...its wide open from the Z06 screens and I built a screen to keep debris from entering the rad area. Look at my sig again...and then look at OC Mikes car...a piece of ABS plastic was placed on top of the rad and completely seals the hi pressure area...I don't think a lot of air gets over the rad with the hood clearance and fans pulling air through...but the addition of the plastic piece insures all air is directed through the RAD...upon a closer inspection you can clearly see that this area is larger than the original stock hi pressure area that has the large piece of plastic below the air filter. If you have any doubt you should just look at the images. Earlier the plastic piece (stock under the air filter) was being left in position..this did create a smaller hi pressure area in front of the condensor/rad...after realizing this it was simply removed. Once again look at my sig then a pic of OCMikes setup. OCMike's is the finished product..he made a lot of ponies and has an 8 rib setup too.very nice!
Shinobi'sZ: Thanks for the confidence in my abilities, but I don't have a welder and I don't trust anyone in this little half-assed town to do the work. I'm sure the solution you have is great, but I felt mine was cleaner, and it makes it easy to return the car to stock. Also, with my setup changing the air filter is as easy as on a stock C5. I don't understand why I'm getting a bad time from some people regarding this. If the ATI kit came with a properly designed shroud (like mine) would some of you still be saying it's better to cut, chop and weld to lower the radiator? What the hell?
I don`t have a Supercharger as yet, but I`ve seen how the lowered radiator and top shourd look after being cut. IMHO, it is not a very clean look at all. Oh well, I guess I`m into show and go.
My rad is relocated like Shinobis... Sometimes... when it comes to having 730 hp running correctly, it isnt all about how things look... but how they function.
I dont know of anyone on this forum who puts money in the car in either the looks or go fast parts (or both) and does not keep the car looking as good as possible. That goes for my car as well. :blueangel:
Sninobis car has one of the best cared for paint jobs I have ever seen!
Am I Bad
If you saw the setup in person you might think differently...or you might not..go look at OCMike's setup http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/ocmike/
.and if you think that having the piece of plastic looks cleaner ..than it does...to you...but really it was about function (full enclosure of the hi pressure area). I am more concerned about what works under the hood. I am not one to spend a bunch of money on Carbon Fiber and Chrome under the hood..that stuff is cool looking but I need the stuff that gives me 500+ rwhp/rwtq..thats all I care about. I have never done that on any of my cars or bikes...its kind of like if you were to look under the hood of a NASCAR or an INDY car...I like to look at wires, bolts, and aluminum thats why the plastic valve covers are off my car (I love to look at Coil Packs!)...I know where everything is at and where should be and if I have to pop the hood after a race or hard run...it is to check those things mentioned. But once again my Procharger never got above 185 degrees in traffic..I know that 2 fans are better than one..and that even stock when the RAD area would get debris in it...I would clean it and the car would run a couple of degrees cooler. Its quite challenging to get 346 cid over 500 rwhp/rwtq...you kind of need all the plumbing that goes with FI...if you want the clean version of a modified FMIC go look at OCMikes sig or MMS's new setup...as I said before OCMikes is the end result of some R&D..the laid down rad was never my idea..but improved function. I am glad to see somebody else take the initiative to experiment with fixing their own car...it is inspiring. I mentioned laying down the Radiator because of what it allows not brag about appearance as much as performance....once you do it you could move the RAD to and from Stock locations in about 20 mins if you bought some 3" 1/4 bolts and drilled 4 holes...I installed a Procharger, modded Radiator, and Headers/Midpipe in one Saturday watching the war on TV in my garage.
Thanks for the compliment Steve...but I have to admit my car is looking kind of dirty right now after sitting in the garage on jack stands with no motor in it. I just can't see myself pushing it into the driveway to wash it and then pushing it back in...but I thought about it. :jester
Well, for those who haven't already spent the money to have their radiator lowered the horizontal airbox/factory fans is a great solution, even if some don't like the idea.
Ganson, Your idea seems to be pretty good. I`m not sure how it looks in person , but it look better than the lowered radiator idea I saw on a Vette a few days a go. But, I must add that the installer said the finished look would be better.
Vetterdstr, I didn`t say that everyone that had the lowered radiator mod looked bad. I said that the one I saw didn`t look good. With the right ideas and a little know how anything can be made to look nice if that`s what a person wants. But, maybe you`re not into looks, that`s you, and maybe I am, that`s me. Don`t take the things I said personally, I didn`t mean it that way.
Shinobi`sz, I`m not sure how you got in the middle of all of this. It wasn`t me..
