I have just installed my modified factory dual fan shroud/air filter assembly, and it works great. The shroud uses the factory dual fans, and has an air filter built in. It's a standard Fram panel filter that runs horizontally, above the fans. The overheating problem associated with the ATI fan shroud is GONE.
Let me know if you want more info.
I have a be-cool radiator for the FL heat and it made installing the ATI a nightmare, and now I can't get to the filter to clean it, If I were going to keep the blower I was going to lower the radiator and go over the top and the shroud also blocks a third of the radiator as you know. How accessible is the filter in this new configuration this could be a great alternative for many ATI guys.
Changing the filter is simple, since it's right at the top of the shroud. It runs parallel to and just in front of the upper radiator hose. You just pull it out and pop in a new one. No need to lower the radiator, either.
Keep in mind this is a hand-built prototype. As such, it's a bit ugly, but it works great. I'm hoping one of the tuners will see enough potential to have a fab shop bang some out. If not, maybe I'll do it myself, as I know this has been a problem for myself and others. I used a sheet of PVC to make the airbox, but sheet metal would be ideal. I had to relocate the passenger-side fan (lower) to make room for the airbox & supercharger.
A pic of the raw shroud can be seen at http://www.ganson.com/fan_shroud_prototype.htm
(How the heck do I post a pic here?)
Great work Glenn! Our upgraded fan would have done the trick just as well, but Im impressed with your desire to make the stock fans work! Great job!
Shinobi'sZ: Not sure what you're saying. Laying down the radiator doesn't look like the easy way to me. I'm nowhere near A&A. My solution cost me $200.
Nate: Thanks very much. I did first put a 2950 CFM fan on my ATI shroud, and it still ran way too hot. This setup runs cooloer than when it was stock, without the supercharger! It must be due to the placement of the passenger side fan?
By the way, Nate, when are you going to tune my car? I'd like to sneak in h/c if possible as well.
Re: ATI Overheating Problem SOLVED (QuickSilver2002)
QuickSilver2002: Thanks very much. Wouldn't it be nice if they (ATI) would redesign their shroud like this? They wouldn't even have to provide a fan, because you could bolt in the factory fans. The hard part is to get them to acknowledge that there's a problem. Oh, well.
Personally i have never had an overheating problem....I don't understand why some do and some don't??????
Initially I had the Be Cool Radiator in my car when I did the S/C install... It just worked out to be too much radiator and not enough fan caused my heating problems. Lowering the rad and re-installing the stock fans took care of that need.
Yes, but some of us are nowhere near a tuner who can lower the radiator for us, plus, I wanted a solution that allows me to easily return the car to stock.
I understand your position, I was not saying you should lower your radiator instead of doing the fan setup you have now. I was talking about my heat problem with a thicker radiator and what I did to fix it. :smash:
