I won't make this a Valentine vs. Passport debate but I do drive with a detector (Passport 8500) If you learn to "listen/read" the warnings, you'd never drive without one.
A radar detector is not a license to speed.... but I can tell you this...
The money I've saved in deservable tickets has paid for that detector MANY, MANY times over.

The Escort 8500 has saved my butt many times. They now have an upgraded version the X50, that responds quicker to laser.
I drive at "55 Stay Alive" speeds, even when the limit is 65... I use my radar detector, so I wont get stopped for going too slow... when it goes off I speed up the the posted limit.. I have to white knuckle it until the danger passes..
As illustrated here they are not fool proof and you do "learn" how to use them. However, the way I see it, in a Torch Red Corvette I tend to stand out a bit more than the family truckster next to me who could be going faster and who do you think will get pulled over? In a state where the troopers tend to be instant-on advocates you learn to really take heed to any beep and believe it or not I have noticed that you definitely get shot more when in the left most lane so abide by the law of "Keep right, pass left".
Also never be the lone car in front...always make sure there is a car ahead in the left lane in case of the instant-on police.
Love my V1 for whatever level of protection it gives me.

Like that old American Express commercial with Karl Malden....
"Never leave home without it!"
I've had a radar detector for almost 25 years, going back to those old huge Escorts with the analog signal strength meter and the amber alert lamp. Presently use a Valentine1. Can't even begin to guess how many times a radar detector has saved my worthless A$$!
