Lots going on here, hopefully those were all history codes?

Anyway, you need to clean your key as has been said above. I'd use alcohol as opposed to a lubricant. If that doesn't work then you'll probably need the lock cylinder replaced

Again, this is most likely not the column lock. You even have a code to point you in this direction. The pull-key wait 10 seconds is a common thing and you do need to wait 10 seconds for things to be reset.

Also, you know, you really should take a few minutes and read your owner's manual. You'll find this problem and solution listed as well as an explanation why your car will idle but not drive at speed when you get that message.

The column lock recall involves a reflash of the computer to shut off the fuel supply on MN6's but I don't know whether they do the reflash on the A-4's since they actually remove the locking plate.
What it sounds like to me is that the tech may have performed the MN6 recall on your A-4. Before spending any money on a CLB which by most accounts won't work on the early C-5's, I would contact the factory rep or at least talk to the top tech at a dealership that services alot of Vettes. If the proper recall was performed the steering wheel would turn whether you have the key on or not.

Ask GM to explain how the column can lock if the proper recall has been done on an A-4 and they removed the locking plate.

I wonder if your dealer really did the recall repair on it or not. But since you took it in, and since there have been guys who said that they have had the same problems with it after the recall repair, I guess it is a good thing I went ahead and ordered the CLB. I don't know, we will start with the obvious and go from there. Thanks everyone.
Hey Bakersfield...welcome to the forum and C5 ownership! I also have a '98 and had mine towed to the dealer on a flatbed with a column lock a couple years ago. It turned out to be my battery. Although the battery seemed okay, it was starting to age. I replaced it and never had troubles with it since. Some of your codes (especially loss of communications) also seem like there is something more going on than just a column lock issue. Please consider getting a new battery (Optima Red Top...lots of info on this forum) before you do anything else. Bill Curlee is also an excellent resource on this forum and can provide a lot of valuable assistance. Also, please read my post (sticky) in the tech section which is a collection of much of the information available on this forum including photos and links. I hope this helps. Please post me if you need more help and I'll try to work you thru it. Best of luck to you.

If your column is still locking with the key removed, the recall was done wrong. It should not lock.

Thanks 3XBLACK! You said in a few words what I have been trying to say in many.

This message applies to everyone with an A-4.

IF YOU HAVE HAD THE RECALL DONE AND YOUR A-4 STILLS LOCKS THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN YOU REMOVE THE KEY THEN "GOMER' DOWN AT THE DEALERSHIP DID THE WRONG RECALL. CHECK YOUR CAR TODAY AND IF IT STILL LOCKS TAKE IT BACK AND FORCE THEM TO REMOVE THE LOCKING PLATE LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE. IT IS FREE!

Now if your car is a MN6 none of the above applies because under Federal law they cannot remove your locking plate. They can only remove the plate from the A-4's.

You will get the "Wait 10 sec" message if you have low power from the battery. If your battery is more than 3 years old I would invest in a new one. Cheap insurance really. I'll bet your problems disappear once replaced. But then I would get the car to the dealer's and let them do the recall. They have done a few by now and they have the best fix for automatics. Really!! The aftermarket CLB has had issues with some cars so I bought the GM Harness K that goes into the A4 so that I wouldn't have the issue. Any thing else? Keep the questions coming.

Dwayne,

The comments offered around the battery may be worth looking into. The Vette has (had) been sitting in the garage more than usual once you and I started talking about a possible sale.....and that was mid-January. The battery is not that old (3 years?), but it could be low on charge.

Dwayne, hope you have this problem taken care of. It's really a pain when something like this happens. Let me know what you need and I will help you in anyway I can.

Thanks Gary, Ray and Dave (local buds) and everyone else for your input, it was very helpful. The CLB should arrive today. I have an appointment with the Chevy dealer to have them re-do the recall next Tuesday because the column does lock when the key is turned off and removed (not supposed to right?) I cleaned the keys last night (didn't help) and I am going to install a new Optima battery this weekend as well. That ought to do it. I will post one more update when I get the problem resolved to let everyone know what it was. Thanks again to everyone. Dwayne

I hate to inform everyone of this, but I installed the CLB that I bought from Thunder Racing, and it did not fix the problem. The same problem still exists, after the car has been sitting for an hour or more, it will say "Pull Key - Wait 10 Seconds". I just went to go get some gas, and when I started it up after gassing up, no problem. I went to get milk next, no problem. Like I said, if it sits for more than an hour or so, it will give me that message. I will have the battery checked tomorrow and see if it is weak. I still have my appointment at the Chevy dealer to do the recall, but dang it, I thought the CLB would fix the problem. Now I just hope I can return it for a refund. They said it wouldn't work on some 98 models, so we will see. More later. Dwayne

Read back in this thread. Your problem is most likely a dirty or bad resistor pellet or a problem with the ignition cylinder.

I have another key, and I think it does the same thing with that key as well, but I will double check that tonight when I get home.

So sorry to hear this Dwayne.

I hope the battery is the issue and you can get it fixed ... $99 Optima Red Top from CostCo. I got away from the AC Delco to the yellow top for my stereo, lights upgrades, and just for the peace of mind.
I hope you can solve this issue. I know you're frustrated, but hang in there.

As I said in an earlier post, I went through two CLB's and still got the "Pull key..." message. The complete and correctly done recall should solve your problem.

i actually got this message for the first time last week. started the car... got the message, but the car continued to idle just fine. went to back out, car died. thought i stalled by mistake (never do though) so i tried again. same thing happened.

anyways... i knew i was having problems with the battery, and what it ended up being was a bad connection with the + side terminal on the battery. the bolt was actually lose. tightened everything up, everything is now fine. def. worth a try right??

why did everyone jump to the column lock??? he didnt say the column locked at all. dont you get a different message also with the column lock?? like "service column lock" or something like that?

"PULL KEY WAIT 10 SECONDS"
...........Never happened................................ ......................
Not since the Stealership did the recall AND removed the locking plate.

Yeah, avoid the Stealership and buy a CLB. Good thought.

'98 with 9K miles? Love that... Other owner didn't drive it enough to even know there was a problem - most probably.. Either that or he figured it was something serious and dump it on you! Don't worry - I think after you've got this bug fixed, you'll love the car. This will be a "fond" memory! You'll get lots of help with "do it your self" stuff before you send it in (if any of this doesn't work)...

Save the wave and good luck..

To persons having issues with the "Pull Key" message, 97-98 Vettes, and CLB's.
Aftermarket CLB's will not work correctly on some 97-98 models. My post will tell you what the problem is and how to fix it.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=881814
fyi, 97-98 factory column lock is the same on the A4 and MN6.
