I am thinking of replacing the exaust on my 98 convertible. On the parts for sale section I see lots of members selling used exaust systems usually for about half the price of new systems (I would have to add shipping charges to the price too). Should I have any concerns about buying a used system, or should I just go out and buy a new one? My feeling is that since I am going to have to have this installed for me I should just bite the bullit and buy a new system.
I just had a Vortex Ram air system with a Vortex duct installed. This was my latest add on. Thanks for any input
First things first. Do you know the sound you are after? Each system is a little different ... some have rosonance at cruise that some like and others hate. My point is that there is a reason the systems are used and for sale and not on somebody's car! Perhaps they sold the car or had it on lease and returned it to stock first, BUT for others the original owners were obviously disappointed for some reason. Listen to the systems IN PERSON first on other C5 at idle; during accel. (WOT); and then cruisinging at 70'ish so you know if you'll be able to carry-on a conversation and listen to tunes ... check that out. Once you know the system you want, you probably can get a good deal used! Good luck.
I was just having this conversation (kinda) with a friend. I've had many cars that I have modded out over the years, most of which were second or 3rd owner. I have never had a hard time buying used/trading parts to mod a vehical.
However
I bought the vette new and somehow I can't bring myself to buy/trade a used part for it ( excluding the Corsa X pipe that I got in the pay it forward thread, which was in top notch condition)
Having said that, I have never gotten a raw deal or a bad part when buying used, but I usually have a pretty good idea before the purchase...

Dont be afraid to buy used exhaust....if anything it will be "broken in"
a little more. I am waiting for my "used wheels" to come via UPS
tomorrow from a fellow forum member. Once you buy the item used you can resell it for the same price a year later. I bought SLP exhaust
from a fellow forum member and resold them for the same price....they were just too loud for my tastes. Good luck with whatever decision you make!
To save some money on shipping, use Greyhound! I shipped two Ti mufflers from CT to CA and each muffler was $36. for a total of $72.
Post office UPS and FEDEX wanted $135 for each box!!
Boxes were only 20 pounds each and were packed very well!
Here is what my boxes looked like.
The odd shape was what made the shipping charges so high with UPS FEDEX and USPO. They measured it square!

where does greyhound actually take them to? does the person who it is being sent to need to go to the terminal and show ID to claim the boxes or how does it work?
Not sure what your looking for but I'm going to have a bearly used Corsa
Touring Tigershark exhaust. Its their tamer exhaust for the C5. You can
get an idea of how it sounds here;
When you decide to ship Greyhound, you need to ask the person who is purchasing your parts if there is a Greyhound station close to his location and if he will be willing to go there to pick up the package. If he /she agrees that that is a good plan, all you need to do is figure out when the parts need to be there on the agreeded date that the person can pick them up. Then box up your parts and take them to your local Greyhound station. That is all there is to ot. You even get a tracking number.
Worked out VERY well for me!!
Look for stainless steel, low miles and of course make sure its in good shape (goes without saying but you never know) Get pics if you can. You should be okay.

That's why you need to find used Corsa, Borla, or similiar systems that have the over the axle pipes seperate. It makes them cheaper to ship and much easier to install, especially if you cut your old exhaust over axle pipes.
