Maybe someone can help me. I have a 2000 A4. Last night I pushed and held the AH button up to 45 seconds and nothing happened. I did it in Park, Neutral, and Drive . . . but still nothing. Doesn't it come up on the DIC saying "Competition Mode"? Am I doing something wrong or do you think something is not working properly?
I have an Autocross coming up in about a month, and I would like to use (or fix) this feature.

Here is what it says for Comtitive Driving Mode in the 2000 Owners manual
Competitive Driving Mode
The driver can select the optional handling mode by
pressing the ACTIVE HANDLING button on the
console for more than five seconds, while the vehicle
is stopped with the ignition on. Competitive Driving
mode allows the driver to have full control of the rear
wheels while the Active Handling System helps steer the
vehicle by selective brake application. The instrument
cluster light will not be on. The Traction Control System
will not be operating. Adjust your driving accordingly.
When you press the ACTIVE HANDLING button
again, or turn the ignition to ACC, the Active
Handling and Traction Control Systems will be on.
The TRAC/ACT HNDLG-ON message will be
displayed temporarily in the DIC and a chime
will be heard.
On mine you can be in any gear at any speed and hold that button for 5 seconds and it give me the "competitive driving" read out on the DIC.
Maybe it doesn't read out comp driving on the 2000's?? Try punching it and see if you get some wheel spin, that will tell you if it you are comp driving. (your t/c off light won't be on either by the way)

Are you 100% sure you have A/H? In model year 2000 - A/H (RPO code JL4) was still a $500 option. Check on the RPO code on the glove box door and see if you have JL4 listed there. You might not have it. In which case - the button on the console is for traction control only. Pushing the button when you have T/C only will simply turn T/C on and off. The car will never go into Competition Mode. Competition Mode leaves A/H engaged and turns off T/C.
Here's a web page that shows the RPO codes along with the cost of the option and the numbers of how many cars had those options......
You probably don't have the competition mode option. I had the same thing happen and then learned that my (pre-owned) '00 wasn't ordered with it. If nothing happens when you hold it down, but the traction control goes on and off each time you push it.. you don't have the option on your car.

Unless the button has "AH" next to it you don't have active handling. Given your description I would guess you don't. It wasn't standard on 2000.
Thanks for the help. I've checked out my RPO codes and found out that I don't have the AH option. Too bad. Anyway, I'll post some pics of some garage mods and lower photos soon.
