The ultimate Corvette tax!
Stopped by my friendly Chevy dealership today to purchase something that had been missing on my baby since I got her.
If you will all run out to your garages now, (I'll wait) and lift your door handles on your babies; you will see 2 tiny little rubber tips and I mean TINY!
I had one missing.
I asked the parts man if he would fire up his computer and see if he could find me one.. He does and starts laughing and says "Well I guess that's the "ultimate corvette tax", I cringe and he says.....$7.95 for ONE!!! NOT the TWO per door...just ONE!!!!
UHHH...16 dollars for two, and...$32 for both doors!!!!!!
Now I'm all for helping GM get over it's fiscal woes, but not by causing ME fiscal woes........SHEESH!!!!!
I hear you..... I stopped by my local chevy dealership last year when C6s first came out. They wanted $79.99 for just the new C6 brochure I know where I will NOT be buying my next Vette at
No, I got that one beat. A few weeks ago on my way to the track I noticed that I was missing a screw from one of my tail lights. No biggie, since I didn't have time to match one up I figured I'd stop a the dealer. I was thinking $2 or so since it was a torx head screw. NOT, $8.00!!! And the replacement wasn't even a torx head, it was a regular phillips. ONE SCREW. I'd be willing to bet my picture was taken and put by the water cooler under "dumbest schmuck of the day purchase."
Got you all beat so far. Bought car 2 months ago and notice the day after buying it one of the metal valve stem air caps was missing from 1 stem. I figured 2 or 3 dollars max to replace.
Stopped by the dealer and was told I would have to buy the whole tire pressure sensor for about $100! Told them Hell No,and I was heading to the show room to check out the new cars. I told them I wanted to pay "close attention" to the wheels on the new cars.
OK, here goes. I bought a 50th anniversary key on e-bay. They wanted to know the VATS# so they'd send the right one. The dealer wanted $45 to read my existing key!!!!! Thanks to this board, I was able to get it right with a multi-meter.

WOW!, I can't decide which is the biggest rip-off here! Seems like each story is more gruesome than the next!
I wonder what it would cost to build a corvette using only GM parts dept. parts? ..... any guesses?
Guys I'm afraid that kind of pricing is in affect for all GM dealers, regardless of branch. I work at a Pontiac/GMC dealer, as a tech, and about 1 1/2 year ago a company called Reynolds& Reynolds came in a redid all of the prices on parts. All the mechanics were pissed cause it was'nt fair to the consumer. Yes, some mechanics are'nt about ripping people off. Anyway I seen the price gank on the screen myself, some of the stuff is marked up 200%. An O-ring that was $.78cents is now $4.50. Its downright gross what they did. Here is another example from yesterday.... This one tech was working on a 3500 GMC van w/ 8 lug wheels, the customer wanted a price on a center cap since one was missing. Now these are the stamped steel wheels that are painted grey and are the base line rim. The grey center cap was $87 and each black plastic lug nut cover was $5.15 each, and there was 8 of them needed So right around $125 for a center cap set. That is .
So if anyone needs vette parts from the dealer, let me know and I can get them at cost. I priced the scopes for a Z06 rear brakes, and they retailed for $98, my cost was $61. Again if its something small let me know, I can get it and all that I would charge is shipping

I paid $10 for a front turn signal at a Chevy Dealer. Did this one time, then went to parts store and/or Walmart. In all fairness, the C5 uses a special long life bulb that I was never able to exactly match, but come on, $10 for a turn signal bulb !
