Default Quick Question?

Dumb Question -- What type of engine coolant are you guys using? Mine is running low and needs to be refilled and me being the engine incompetent person that I am I have no idea what to get?

Thanks

Never a dumb question.

The handbook says:
Engine Coolant
The cooling system in your vehicle is filled with
DEX-COOL engine coolant. This coolant is designed
to remain in your vehicle for 5 years or 150,000 miles
(240 000 km), whichever occurs first, if you add only
DEX-COOL extended life coolant.

and:
When adding coolant, it is important that you
use only DEX-COOL (silicate-free) coolant.
If coolant other than DEX-COOL is added to
the system, premature engine, heater core or
radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the
engine coolant will require change sooner -- at
30,000 miles (50 000 km) or 24 months,
whichever occurs first. Damage caused by the
use of coolant other than DEX-COOL is not
covered by your new vehicle warranty.

I'm sure other members will chip in with other options despite the health warning.

I don't think it's so dumb. A year or so ago I was in the same situation. I went to the Autozone to just stop in and pick up a gallon. Found out there are TWO types of antifreeze. One is for older model cars and one for newer. They are different colors too if I remember correctly. There is a term for the newer one, but I cannot remember what it is.

Otherwise, prestone....

EDIT: DEEGEE beat me to it

If you decide to add water - deionized or distilled water is the way to go. Don't add the green stuff. Make sure it's red and it says Dex-Cool on the jug. You might also look for something on jug about GM, etc.

Absolutly! The two are not chemically compatable. The green stuff can damage your gaskets and seals.

I just added Prestone Dexcool 50/50 premix. I bought it from Pep Boys for $9.99 a gallon.

To the best of my knowledge actually there are three types of Anti freeze. Colors are Green,Orange and Red. The orange or red,I don't remember which one, is used in later model Toyotas and the other color is Dex cool. The green is the Prestone type that we have all used for decades. I have all three types in my garage. Hep
