I started trying to install a new shifter today and got stuck removing the center console. I need to remove two electrical connectors going to the traction control switch module. One was no problem. The problem is the connector going to the light indicating when the passenger air bag is turned off.
I am sure I will feel stupid when I hear the answer, but can anyone please tell me how to remove this connector? I was able to remove clips at both ends of the connector that is inline with the wires between the lamp and the traction control module. However, even with the two clips removed I was unable to separate the connector. It did look as if there was a piece that I needed to push in with a screw driver or awl while pulling the two ends apart, but this didn't seem to work either.
Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I too at first couldn't figure it out but finally did.
Look under the clip. Look at the side you can't see well. You'll see it has a little tab locking the wire part of the connector to its receptacle. Just insert a small screw driver in there and pull it the connector out.
For grins, this is the same kind of connector that is used going to the temperature sensor next to where you insert your key into the ignition.
Also, another one I fooled with too long, the lighter connector. Just lift both gray tabs simultaneously and it pulls/falls off.
One more connector to pull that isn't described anywhere; the one going to the fuel cap release. That one takes a small screwdriver and works the same as the air bag connector.
Hope that helps!
I installed a Hurst. Woo-hoo! I adjusted the spring tension one full turn to make it easier. What a difference, and so smooth on the road.
Thanks very much for the help. Between that connector (which simply didn't want to come out regardless of the pressure applied on the pin) and the T pin in the shift handle, it was more frustrating than had been planned. The good news its now finished! The only problem is I have to go to Home Depot to look for the 2 of the 3 dash cowl screws that somehow ended up missing. I'll probably pay $1 at home depot if they have them. If not, I'll have to go to the Chevy dealer and probably pay $10.
