I live in orlando and was wondering if 10w30 or 10w40 would be better then 5w30? I know the book says 5w30 but it doesnt get cold here just really hot. Thanks.
If you look at the temp ranges for each oil you will find 5w30 tops out at 100 degrees and 10w30 tops out at 110 degrees. So, do the math. (looks like I'm odd man out) Doug
The 10W-30 oil buys you nothing over the 5W-30. In fact, if you are worried about high oil temps (260+F), Mobil 0W-40 and Castrol European 0W-30 are great choices. Even under Florida ambient startup conditions, lower viscosity oils pump up to pressure faster, which means wear due to startup conditions is reduced compared to startup wear resulting from the use of 10W - on-up viscosity oils.
I live in San Diego and rarely see my oil temps exceed 220F. Therefore, I use 5W-30.

These oils spend most of their operating life above 200 degrees. Why would it matter if the air temperature was 100 degrees or 110 degrees?
Hey man... I run Royal Purple 10w40 in east Texas and im sure it gets just as hot/cold here as it does in FL. I saw a little oil consumption so I went with the heavier weight oil and a AMS oil can and haven’t seen a prob since.
I am using the recenty availalbe 15-50 Mobil 1, EVERTHING works better,
hardly noticable piston tap when cool, much quieter!
Faster to pressure at start-up
higher pressure at low RPM
My friends that build race engines LAUGH OUT LOUD at all the BS that thin oils are better. Yeah, better to increase CAFE ratings for the big 3 on brand new engines, and better to wear out engines sooner so there is more service $$$ profit. I'll never use any 0-30 or 5-30 unless its winter in northern Minnesota...and I moved away from there in '68 and never been back!
Please don't flame me for being the odd kid here, use thin oil if you please, but I'll never use it!
I also live in Orlando area and I run 10w-30. The 2000 manual states "As shown in the viscosity chart, SAE 5w-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you can use SAE 10w-30 if it's going to be 0 degrees F. (-18C) or above." The choice is yours. I have over 70k miles which is why I run the 10w-30.
