If you buy a 6 speed, the first mod you should do is the CAGS eliminator. It only costs about $20.00 through Corvettes of Houston and will give you great peace of mind knowing that you can shift into any forward gear whenever you want to rather than when the car's computer thinks it is OK. Not having a CAGS eliminator on you car could greatly increase your chances of being rear-ended when in heavy traffic. The reason I believe this is I almost got rear-ended a couple of times before I bought the CAGS eliminator. Normally I would run through the gears at high enough RPM that the Cags would not kick in, but when in stop and go traffic I would forget about the stupid CAGS and try to shift into second on a slow takeoff and I would be blocked out. By the time I would react and go to fourth or back to first the person behind me who was not expecting me to slow down for no apparent reason would be slamming on brakes to avoid running over me.
Now wouldn't it be embarrassing to get rear-ended in your Vette!

Its a factory feature that forces a 1-4 shift under certain conditions. It was created to help with gas mileage estimates - but can be defeated by installing a CAGS eliminator part readily available from almost all the vendors and very easy to install. Once installed, the car will shift into second anytime you want. This was the first mod I did to mine.
As someone else pointed out, the whole point of CAGS is to increase the cars efficiency during the EPA mileage test.
We should all thank GM for this, because they did it to avoid a gas-guzzler tax, which makes the car less expensive for us. GM also made CAGS very, very easy to defeat - something they didn't have to do. GM has done plenty of dumb and senseless things, but CAGS isn't one of them.
You don't need a lift to install a CAGS defeat (in fact, there really is no such thing as a CAGS defeat - you defeat CAGS simply by unplugging the solenoid on the transmission. The 'CAGS defeat' that you install is a mere resistor that prevents your car from throwing a code when the CAGS solenoid is unplugged). You only need a jack and jack stands - just lift and support the rear of the car - you only need enough room to get under there.
Does thr 1-4 shift light still come on even if its installed? Mine is done but the light comes on? Is this normal?
It's normal if you use the resister CAGS defeat module. I eliminated mine with tuning software so the IP light doesn't come on ever - a side benefit of using software to defeat it.
I have a CAGS eliminator kit from mid-america, with pictures showing what I should be looking for. I looked under the car today, but do not see anything like their picture. Does someone have a picture of the CAGS plug on or near the transmission?
It is on the drivers side of the transmission. Blue and white connectors. I think it is the only blue/white connector in that area. It was easy and took two minutes to install.
