Default Techron Banned???

In the news this morning, I read the new energy bill congress is trying to pass will eliminate gasoline additives, specifically "MTBE". They say it has contaminated drinking water.
Does anyone know if this is our beloved Techon? , I don't have an old bottle to read the label ingredients handy.
If it's true then, that would shoot down all of our "top tier" gasolines!

MTBE is NOT Techron. MTBE was an additive that was supposed to make fuels cleaner-burning. It did this trick alright, but WHOOPS, it also does contaminate ground water supplies. A lot of service stations' underground tanks leak just the tiniest bit. The MTBE is pretty bad compared to gasoline without it. Gas stations are converting to ethonal as the additive now.

In any case,

This comment is ironic in that the Government was the one that originally mandated the MTBE (at least here in Kalifornia). Now they're reversing course. So, yeah, leave it to them to F*** something up indeed!

If they would ever ban Techron, then there would be a lot of Vette owners with gas guages going all over the place.

No, they'll use ethonal as the replacement for MTBE. They both do the same job, which is to oxygenate the fuel to burn cleaner. There is an excellent article on MTBE -- what it is and what it does -- over at Wikipedia. Click Here

Probably, if Shell is still using MTBE. MTBE when it was in full use was most likely in every brand of gas. It's not a detergent or other type additive that gives one brand of fuel an edge over another. It's a chemical added to comply with clean air rules. Here in CA, it has been banned for 2 years now. Ethanol or some other oxygenate is used in it's place . Techron, V-Power, System 3, ... these are all proprietary detergents that each company comes up with.

Anyway, banning MTBE is probably a good thing. That sh*t has been found in a lot of ground water supplies. It just goes to show that even when we do something with the intention of protecting the environment, the law of unintended consequences will often times make fools of us.

Anyway, I gotta go kill some weeds with my used oil.

I just bought a bottle the other day at Pep-Boys.
Rang up at $12.99...I paid it but told the cashier that I always paid $9.99 and that I coulda' sworn the sign said 9.99.

Sure enough the sign said 9.99. A manager came over, authorized my 3+$ credit...and promptly removed the sign stating that all oil based products just jumped in price.

Gee, I wonder why.

Hot Rod mag. did an over the counter additive test a long while back. Techron was the only one to eat carbon from piston tops.

MTBE, another Clinton screw up. Destroys the water if it gets into it for 1,000's of years. You also get 10% less mileage with it, not sure how that helps clean the air unless the cleanliness is more than 10%.

Googled MTBE/EPA. From the Washington Times (rightwing rag):

"EPA's MTBE debacle got under way in 1990 with the enactment of a host of amendments to the Clean Air Act. One of those amendments instructed EPA to develop a reformulated gasoline program for the nation's most polluted cities, with the goal of reducing carbon monoxide emissions from cars and trucks. EPA unveiled its reformulated gasoline program with great fanfare in 1993 and promptly mandated the use of what it touted as cleaner-burning oxygenated fuels in 39 metropolitan areas beginning in 1995."

Seems that the MTBE issue began under King George I. Check your facts before you criticize.
