Edit: New 2nd pic which shows the rubber missing down to the belts....
Ok, here's the problem. My driver front tire has a slow leak and when I want to drive the car, I have to air the tire up (not totally flat, but loses ~ 6-8lbs). I think the problem may have started when I had the wheel apart for powdercoating. They are the 3pc CCW classic wheel. I believe that the leak is around the rivots/screws, so I monkey'd with them for a few trys. I put silicone around the screws before tightening.
No dice on that. Here's where the problem comes in. I took the wheel only to the local tire store (Monday) here to have them remove the tire from the wheel so I can apply some silicone on the inner rim where the barrel comes together (I did that night). My wife brought the wheel back to the store after 24hrs for the silicone to cure. They mounted the tire and then noticed something that wasn't right and explained to her about the problem.
Here are some pics that show the problem:
I don't know what to think. Is this tire failure and should it be covered under warranty? Did the tech do this when taking off the tire? Why wouldn't they have said anything when the tire was taken off?
What do you guys think?
Sorry for some of the usless info....

Reason: Better 2nd picture
Why wouldn't they have said anything when the tire was taken off?
Because they probably did it putting it on and no offence they were dealing with a woman an figured they coud get away with that
That doesn't look like tire failure. Looks like tire man failure. I would take it back and scream bloody murder. If you would have done that your rim would show rash. Go get-em
The close-up is out of focus so it's nearly impossible to see what you've got there. Can't tell if it's a chunk out or excess material. So what was the tire store guy's explanation of what it is and how it happened. I assume it didn't leak before being taken off for the powder coat job? Where did you get the tire and how long have you had it? It looks like a mfg. defect from what I can see.
I didn't realize how crappy that 2nd pic was. That is a chunck missing down to the belts.
When my wife went to pick up the tire, the tech pointed out to her and said that it wasn't good and I need to replace the tire.....of course.
I don't think that I have ever seen a tire failure in that location. The tire is fairly new and has ~7-8k miles on them. I'll be calling them in the morning.
The tires did not leak before I had the centers off, but that was the only thing off. I let all of the air out of the tire, removed the bolts and the center comes out. The tires were never off during this process.
Guys, that is a chunk bitten out of the tire with a tire machine. I'm no tire man but I've changed alot of tires in my day.. mostly by hand but we did alot of them in the old days... This was pinched with the machine and it tore a chunk out. That's no tire defect from a Mfg. problem... (In My Opinion)
What you might do is take the thing to a DIFFERENT tire store and ask them about it first.. see what they tell you about it. You don't have to tell them which store did this or anything and I wouldn't be a jerk to anyone about it but simply ask the different tire store what their thoughts are... Do you know of someone who is a little more reputable??
Then take it back to the original place and speak to them about it. Don't leave without getting them to make it right with you... If you can't fix it right then and there, get it in writing!!
All IMHO... OK?? That was crappy of them to ever let your wife take it away from their store.. SHAME ON THEM!!!
I had a Very well known chevy dealership in Houston do my alignment wrong and it ruined one of my front tires. When we looked at the spec sheet( they brought it up on the computer when we came in looking for a replacement tire) it showed that they had screwed up on aligning (2) of the tires. It was proof on paper and I still had to fight with 3 different managers to get them to replace the tire when it was clearly thier fault. Needless to say I will NEVER be returning there and I will advise everyone of the horrible customer service that I received from
MAK HAIK CHEVY ON I-10
My advice... Stay on their case about it and don't let up. If it is their fault then they need to pay for it.
