The storm in the gulf has caused gas prices to jump considerably here in the north east. 93 octane is averaging $310/gal. I have been using 93 for the year I've owned my '02 and it runs well. I'm thinking about dropping down to 91. The owners manual states "91 or higher" for optimum performance. For those using 91 octane exclusively, do you find the LS6 responds well: no pinging/detonation?
Highest grade I can get in Northeast Oklahoma and the car runs great. No problems. The higher octane is important for maximum performance but the computer is self adjusting to compensate for the changes between the grades.
The way I see it is the difference between 91 and 93 is usually only $.10 per gallon. So the total difference to fill up a tank is about, what, $1.50. I know I didn't buy a corvette to have to worry about paying an additional whatever amount per tank fill up. Owning a corvette is a life style, not just owning a vehicle. Do yourself a favor and stick to the 93.
Well if Gas gets rediculously priced, Im just running 87. I already have the timing map for it. All I have to do is flash the VCM with my HPTuners when im ready. Which may be soon since they are saying that gas may jump $1 by this weekend because of Katrina.
Been wondering about this. I have heard of two people so far getting a tank full of crap gas .Yes they run the premium. With the prices rising even higher I'm sure more people are going to run the lower octane, so what is going to happen with the gas sitting in the tanks with less people purchasing it. I'm not sure if there are that many vette owners to use up all the 93.Would you be better purchasing 87 octane( for cruising not for hipo driving), than getting old fuel? One of the persons got the bad fuel from a quick trip that is supposed to be top tier.
There really isnt an issue running 87, except the vette's VCM is not too great at determining that the gas is regular. That way it does it uses the knock sensor, if the knock sensor senses more and more knock as it continues, it moves the scale to weigh more on the using the low octane spark table. Now if you are cruising you may never get knock, so then the scales move back to the high octane spark table. But lets say you happen to floor it on the hwy, you could be instantly pushing about 5-10* of knock because the scale moved back to using the high octane spark table. This is where you can cause major problems of detonation and possible engine damage.
Since I have a tuning software, if I use regular gas, I just reflash the entire highoctane table to match the low octane table, so even if the scale moves, it dont matter cause its all low octane numbers. It only takes me 30sec to flash the VCM. Then once I fill premium, I flash it back. Yes its a process but its not like im changing gas octanes constantly. I havent filled regular in about 6months, but there was about 2weeks where i filled regular to figure out truly what the low octane table is. Since the gas price here just hit about $3.50+ for premium, i think i might be putting the low octane table in place instead of worry about performance. I drive the vette daily and dont drive it sprintly going to work, just drive like ms daisy to work and home.
I will ONLY use super...whatever the cost may be. Heck, I used to run straight 116 octane in my supercharged mustang back in the early '90's and it was $5 a gal....$$$$$$ fill up.
My choices are: 87, 89, or 93 octane. I use the 93 octane, Chevron...soon to be whatever I can get. The lines are getting long and the availablity is getting short.
