guys help me out. my 98 vette says car need service soon is this means change the oil? what type of oil/size etc. let me know and thanks to all you have bee great...
Check the digital display's "Oil Life Remaining" percentage. If it's close to zero, change it ASAP! I use and recommend the K&N oil filter (about $10) and Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic. Other good oils are:
German Castrol 0W-30
Mobil 1 0W-40
Amsoil
You can change the oil yourself with a set of Rhino ramps ($30) and a floor jack to raise the rear end - just be sure to pad the jack cradle from the aluminum cross member to avoid gouging the aluminum.
The manual states 6.5 quarts, but all of us usually fill it with 6.9 quarts when also changing the oil filter.
I would suggest having 7 quarts of oil. Before putting on the oil filter fill that up from one of the quarts then once everything is sealed up dump the other 6 in the top. Run car, let cool, then check oil and add if necessary.
very easy - oh remember to raise the backend higher than the front during draining....
I don't know about the 98, but for the 2004 that is not the oil change message.

I am in violent disagreement with this statement. Only those that disregard what's written in the owner's manual will put in more then 6.5 qts. I can't speak for other guy's cars, but mine comes out exactly right on when I add 6.5 qts at oil & filter change. Read the warning in your manual pertaining to "overfilling".

Robert, it is my understanding that the car should be fairly close to level because of all the baffling inside the oil pan. Maybe raise the rear just a tad higher than the front but nothing drastic. Because my garage is on a slant, I actually use a level and just barely take the rear up a bit above the front.
I use Mobil 1 and use my 4 post lift that is level. It takes about 7qts but not quite all can't say 6.9 but more than 6.5. I have to add the rest before the next chage anyway to keep to fill line.

Apparently Stephen is the only person who actually bothered to read the original post before replying...
The message in question has nothing to do with changing your oil so why are we flogging the oil-change horse yet-again?

I'm glad for you, but for many other vette owners 6.5 quarts is not enough so the car is underfilled.
Also if you read my post I said to Fill the oil filter first (about 1/2 quart) then to dump the other 6 quarts in the top. That would equal 6.5 quarts. I then say to run the car and check the level then add oil if necessary....

Oh, and I use 7 quarts myself. :P
I am not sure about the baffling, but I would not suggest a drastic slant anyway.
I have the car on 4 ramps and then I jack the back up a bit so the oil can flow forward and out....
I have a 2000 Coupe and will be doing My First C5 oil change this afternoon! Now I have always changed my own oil for years now, but I am confused on a few things. 1st, my car is lowered a little over an inch, so there seems to be no way for me to make it up on my Rhino Ramps with this thing. Also where should I jack it up in the rear that would be safe? And when do I need to use the "Jacking Pads" they are new to me, never heard of using them b4.
Sorry but I don't ever wait for the DIC to tell me to change my oil...Every 3,000 miles I change it...I don't care if you the quarts tell me I can wait until 5,000-15,000(new extended life Mobil) miles, people have always changed it at 3,000 thats what I wtill do...Thats just my $.02
I'm actually doing my oil change right now...Just thought I would come here and post while it was draining.
Based on every research story I have read on M1, you are wasting your money. But it is your money to waste.
I will send you my address if you want to waste some more.

If that's your reasoning, it is incorrect. It used to be every 2000 miles. 1950 Chevrolet Owner's Manual Maybe even sooner in the '20's, '30's, or '40's.
Considering your car runs dry for five seconds after an oil change, even with the filter filled, you could be doing more damage than changing it at 10k. Most cars in europe recommend 15k mile oil changes, and have have been using that figure since the 80's
