Are you sure it's just a wheel speed sensor? I can order one of those cheap from gm parts direct and replace it myself. No need for an extended warranty if that's all it is.

Okay, I have a 2000 C5 Corvette that I have had for almost 3 years now. About a year or so ago, the Service ABS/Traction Control light came on about every couple of weeks, but always went away when I turned the car off and restarted it. Then it became more frequent. I checked out this forum and they said that if you would clean the Grounds at the top of the wheel well, that it would probably cure the problem. So I did. And it did clear up for awhile. Then it came back. So I cleaned the Grounds again, but this time, it didn't help. It has come and gone every since then. It even stopped a few times for a couple of weeks at a time. It has driven me crazy. I spent most of the day this last Sunday checking everything I knew to check and could NOT find the problem. I took off the wheels, checked the cables going to the sensors, checked the connections on the sensors, sprayed contact cleaner on them. Nothing helps. If I start the car, leave it running, and put a towel against my wheel to keep it from hurting the surface, and tap either front wheel very lightly, the light comes on. The back wheels, nothing happens. If I reset it and turn the wheel setting still, the light comes on. I would say it's the steering wheel position sensor everyone is talking about, but it makes no sense to be able to tap lightly on the wheel and the warning light comes on. Sometimes driving down the street, if I hit a bump, it will come on. PLEASE, anyone, HELP!!! This is driving me completely nuts. Thanks.

Getting these codes sometimes:
U1096 Loss of Communication with IPC
U1064 Loss of Communication with BCM
U1016 Loss of Communication with PCM
Does that shed any light on my situation?
Not good. I have the exact same problem it looks like. It's probably that expensive computer thing everyone talks about on here. I will keep you posted if I find anything out.
Well, I took my battery out of my car last night for about an hour. I removed the battery holder pan and looked down in there with a flashlight. If the battery had ever leaked on the computer, I couldn't see any evidence of it. I checked the connections to make sure they were all tight on the wires in that area also. I put the battery back in the car, and started it up, and as soon as I put it in reverse and turned the wheel a little, the lights came on again. This is really getting frustrating. GM needs to step up to the plate and do a recall on this problem since it is such a safety hazard and because I see so many people on here that are having this problem. Too bad we can't get a petition together and make a difference. I would REALLY appreciate any help anyone can offer. I wish there was someone that knew a lot about this problem that was GM certified in the Nashville area, because if I take it to the dealership, they are going to tell me it is some $3000 part, clean some connector and stick it to me, because you know they have had enough experience with this problem that they know EXACTLY where to go to fix it. Of course, it didn't happen until the warranty ran out.
I believe that you have a problem in one of or both of the coax cables that connects to the wheel sensors, i.e. bad GROUND circuit,or open circuit, and when you tap on the wheel it becomes intermittent. There is a test you can do to determine if that's so. In addition, when you turn the steering wheel, it causes a strain on one or both of the cables and creates the same symptoms. I would jack it up and try to simulate the problem with the engine running, and tug on the cables and connectors that run to the front wheel sensors while turning the wheels from side to side, rather than change the wheel sensors and find that it is a wiring problem rather than a sensing problem. It's easier to do with the wheels removed.
I had the same problem a year or so ago and another forum member said to try to add brake fluid. He said that sometimes when the fluid rolls back and forth, the sensor gets a false reading. I tried it and it WORKED!!! It's been over a year and no more message. Hope it works for you.
That's interesting about the wheel speed sensors because my 2000 is showing a Service ABS and Service Traction Control and also codes C1226 and C1243 which deal with wheel speed sensors.....hmmmmm.
Keep me posted guys. I really hope it's not a module....
Here are my codes:
C1226 RF Excessive Wheel Speed Variation
C1224 RR Wheel Speed Sensor Input Signal is 0

Bad news- it could be ABS Modulator valve, about a 2,800 repair parts/labor,,, it also could be a steering sensor or wheel speed sensor, about 300 bucks...
what codes are you throwing? I had this on and off for a while and ignored, oddly enough after I installed the CLB (yea i know unrelated) the problem stopped, could just be coincidence.
also do a search on the C5 tech section board..this is a common problem.
Well, I finally gave up and took it to a dealership. They diagnosed it and told me it was the left-front wheel speed sensor that is built into the hub. So, $550 later, I got it back, and it seems to be fixed. Hope all of this helps someone.
My 04 did the same thing a couple weeks ago. I took it to the dealer and they could not get it to throw the codes again. However, the passenger door started acting up. (lock and window worked sometimes, sometimes not) Went to the Rock & Roll Vette Fest last week end and almost didn't get to race because the stupid window went down and then decided not to come back up!! My wonderful hubby took care of it for me though. Anyways...... took it back to the dealer and it turned out to be a loose connection going from the car to the door. That may have been what caused the codes to begin with. Don't give up on her yet! You may just have a loose connection somewhere.
By the way, I took home a 3rd place trophy for drag racing (bracket racing) and my hubby, (My50thVette) took home 1st.
