What should you do? Stick your foot up his rearend! This reeks of scam. Take your money elsewhere.
If he accepted your price for his car, then that's it! No extra cash. You may never see him again to get anything back. Are you going to get a "receipt" from him for the amount of the purchase? I hope so.
It's one thing to buy products with a mail-in rebate, but it's completely different to buy a car from an individual (not a reputable company) under similar circumstances. It's hard enough dealing with the reputable companies paying on their advertised rebates, but an individual?
ask yourself, would you do the same thing if you were selling you car? yes? ... why? no? probably.
