Walk away.

There are far too many Vettes out there to get one that you know to be risky going in. They build about 35,000 a year; go find another one of those.

May take a little legwork, but try tracing the owners back and seeing what the story was. Could be perfectly legit, but when you are spending a sizable amount of money, you want to be sure. Good luck. Just remember there are lots of C5s out there to choose from.

The Carfax is only one way of assessing the car. NOTHING beats a thorough inspection by a qualified Corvette mechanic. If it costs you $75 it will be well spent to protect you from big headaches later and it may give you a negotiating point or two.
