Ok well...I went to test drive another Corvette for a Forum member...
I don't think my car liked it very much. My electrical system took a dump. My dash died and i slowly watched my voltage drop to 8.5 volts at which all the dash quit working. I was able to continue driving home where my car died in the driveway. Any ideas?
Well, it looks like one of the power leads to my starter broke off.
Now the next challenge is figuring out how far down the wire is rotten, and the easiest place to change. This wire goes straight into a near by wiring harness.
Simular thing happened to my wife's minivan. The new Delco battery leaked acid and it traveled right down the power lead to the starter. They had to replace the starter, power cable, and battery.... all under warranty. Good luck with yours.
Easy fix, it was a 10 guage wire...not the biggest wire, but the second of the three wires going to my starter. It was somewhat corroded and rotten for about 3 inches...I cut and butt spliced a few more inches of new wire in.
Impossible. Corvettes never have electrical problmes.
Sounded like an alternator to me, but it seems you've found the problem.
I've had alternators fail on me before, but this wasnt like that...this was the wierdest failure i've ever seen...the dash went out but the car still ran good for a while, then i could only drive part throttle, and finally basically died in my driveway.
it doesn't appear to be battery acid. I think the added heat of the Headers didn't help the situation. the coating on the wire was pretty crispy as well.
Honestly i have no idea, but i'm just going to leave it to a mixture of living in a cocoa beach for a year + heat + age. I've got 126,000 miles on the car.
