MetLife Auto Ins. requires a $500 deductible on glass to cover a Vette.

You say it was tinted, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I wanted to have my tempered glass window tinted in my breakfast nook with several other windows but the installer said he advised not to do tempered glass. Wonder if the rear glass is tempered?

At least it wasn't the front. I've heard the front windshield for cars with HUD cost around $1,500 because it is specially tinted for the HUD. My policy has full replacement glass with no deductible (Chubb)

Dime sized hole? I'd closely examine the interior and underside of the car, and see if a bullet passed through. Maybe some kid it taking pot-shots at nice cars.

Have a police officer take a look before you get it replaced.

My front caught a rock - just over 1k for z06 w/hud, so regular should be a little less. I had to eat the $500 deductable

Sounds like a great price!

That is freaky what happened to you. Find anything in the car yet that may have came caused it?

Yes very freaky,
I have not looked around back there yet, I tried to open the hatch and found out real quick that the window actually holds the whole thing together plus theres glass everywhere so I closed it very gently.
When the tech completes the repair on Friday I will look around before I attack it with the shopvac

Sorry to hear about this.
However, you are not alone.

I had the rear window on my '75 stingray explode as well.
the window of flat so nothing from above could have hit it.
But it was safty glass and almost all of it fell inwards.
I was still finding glass inside the car after 3 years.

Good news, the insurance payed for the replacment. It was more expensive then the windshild.
Such a big price for such a small window.

Airplanes dipose of their human waste through a chemical system (blue) that is then frozen. Rumor has it that sometimes it gets released from the aiplane. Since you were near the airport he was making a joke about a piece hitting your window.

Default Another one!

Well, vetteamerica, at least you're not alone -- my '04 hatch glass did exactly the same thing this morning!

Just putt-puttin' along in commuter traffic at about 20 mph, smooth road, and suddenly -- BANG! Spontaneous total shatter like yours, but in my case all the glass immediately collapsed inward into the rear compartment -- only little bits left around the hatch rim. No one around to throw anything, no reason to believe it was shot, no fallen tree limbs, nuttin'.

After checking my shorts , I just turned around and drove to my new dealer, and had them look at it. The service manager's first reaction was "insurance," but to his credit he listened to my explanation, noted the low miles (3900, I bought it last month with only 2900!) and said that while he doubted Chevrolet would cover it, he'd at least ask. I just heard back from him and he said that due to the unusual circumstances, they'd been authorized to do a warranty replacement. Interestingly, he said there was *zero* reports of a shattering hatch window in the GM Tech system database.

The only bad news is that it will take at least 5 days to have the replacement shipped in from Michigan, but hey, to avoid having to hassle with the insurance co., I'll live with it.

So vetteamerica, ever figure out what happened with your window?? I'd hate to think I'd have to go through this twice. I did have the rear window defogger on for about 10 mins. this morning, but I turned it off a minute or two before the Big Bang. I tend to doubt this was the cause, though, as the ambient temperature today was 38F -- hardly a huge temperature difference. I'm hoping the cause was just a freak defect.
