Have a police officer take a look before you get it replaced.

That is freaky what happened to you. Find anything in the car yet that may have came caused it?

I have not looked around back there yet, I tried to open the hatch and found out real quick that the window actually holds the whole thing together plus theres glass everywhere so I closed it very gently.
When the tech completes the repair on Friday I will look around before I attack it with the shopvac

Glad to see you were able to find this...not bad!!!
Hopefully everything works out
However, you are not alone.
I had the rear window on my '75 stingray explode as well.
the window of flat so nothing from above could have hit it.
But it was safty glass and almost all of it fell inwards.
I was still finding glass inside the car after 3 years.
Good news, the insurance payed for the replacment. It was more expensive then the windshild.
Such a big price for such a small window.

Just putt-puttin' along in commuter traffic at about 20 mph, smooth road, and suddenly -- BANG! Spontaneous total shatter like yours, but in my case all the glass immediately collapsed inward into the rear compartment -- only little bits left around the hatch rim. No one around to throw anything, no reason to believe it was shot, no fallen tree limbs, nuttin'.
After checking my shorts
, I just turned around and drove to my new dealer, and had them look at it. The service manager's first reaction was "insurance," but to his credit he listened to my explanation, noted the low miles (3900, I bought it last month with only 2900!) and said that while he doubted Chevrolet would cover it, he'd at least ask. I just heard back from him and he said that due to the unusual circumstances, they'd been authorized to do a warranty replacement. Interestingly, he said there was *zero* reports of a shattering hatch window in the GM Tech system database. The only bad news is that it will take at least 5 days to have the replacement shipped in from Michigan, but hey, to avoid having to hassle with the insurance co., I'll live with it.
So vetteamerica, ever figure out what happened with your window?? I'd hate to think I'd have to go through this twice. I did have the rear window defogger on for about 10 mins. this morning, but I turned it off a minute or two before the Big Bang. I tend to doubt this was the cause, though, as the ambient temperature today was 38F -- hardly a huge temperature difference. I'm hoping the cause was just a freak defect.
