Considering that you were in North Jersey the likelyhood is it was a stray bullet falling to the ground.

Don't know if this will help, but my ex g/f had a university sticker (12 x 6" or so) across the defogger in her rear window, and one cold morning BLAM, same thing. Supposedly due to a hotspot from the sticker over the wires.

Did you have your rear defogger on? Honda had a problem with rear windows blowing out because the rear defoggers stayed on too long, we would update by installing timers that would shut em off at a certain length of time fixed the problem. Honda paid for the windows.

Tis same thing happened to the rear window on my 86 Trans Am many years ago. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale at the time. I had just driven the car for about 2-3 minutes from my apartment to a local supermarket and parked it in the lot. About 30 seconds after going in the store, I heard my license tag called out over the PA system so I ran out to my car. The rear window had completely exploded and the remaining hatch had been blown back about an inch from the resulting force, pulling it out of the latch. Several people told me they heard the explosion from across the parking lot and no one was near my car when it happened.

Apparently, the hot ,summer S. Fla. sun had heated the glass, I had run the A/C for a few minutes driving to the store, and then the sun heated the glass again while the car sat in the lot. The pressure differential it created due to the temp differences inside and outside the car sucked the window into the cooler interior. Most of the glass ended up inside the car.

HMMM, Dime sized hole near downtown Newark, Ill vote for either the bullet theory, blue ice or a spare nut that fell off an airplane.

Oh and for the local aroma, that is why it is affectionately called the armpit of the nation!

Ah, that was vetteamerica. I'm in northern Virginia. The funny thing is that it blew along a section of road where there was no "source" -- no one standing around to throw anything, not a known gunfire area, traffic too slow to throw up a rock, etc. Weird.

Alas, this was northern VA -- although, given what is shovelled in nearby D.C., "armpit" isn't far off

Don't knwo if this has been said or not but my first thought was maybe a bird dropped something. They pick things up thinking it is food and if they cannot eat it they drop it. Maybe that was it. sorry to hear about it though. Good Luck getting it fixed!!

I think the NSA was testing their new "Ray gun" that day.

Good luck with the fix.
